After a quick search through the records I own the O'Jays were for sure earlier owners of an apostrophe. The GIs visiting the Disco where I worked as a DJ often wanted to listen to them. Is the mentioning of a motown act allowed on this list? Or was it Phillysound? Anyway, 26 years of memory fading ... Parts of that gig are on the PBL bis video and I can see myself in the crowd! Also New Order, the first time they ever played Blue Monday live.>> "Great........" (sorry, couldn't resist the cheap Jazz Show reference) - I wonder if we have that one, you'll have to tell me where you are if we do - it's cheesy, but I get much more excited about seeing the people in the crowd I can say I "know" in videos than I do about seeing the bands - would like it in the collection if we don't have it (hint, hint) <> My impression from pics and videos has always been "cold" and impersonal - suppose for what it was, the decor suited - I'd think it kind of engendered that illicit partying in an abandoned warehouse feeling - I'm sure it was very "cutting edge" and "avant garde" at the time - but no, I wouldn't think the acoustics were great - did you really go for the acoustics, Mark? :-) Laurel Oh, I watched The Alcohol Years - I don't know what planet I was on when I read and heard what it was about, but I obviously wasn't on Earth - I thought her story was the context around which another story was told, obviously the Manchester music scene - but it's not - it's ALL about her - Pete was awfully cute in the home movies, but that part was painful to me on some level - pretty much though, it held nothing for me and I was anxious for it to be over so I could get on with something useful - I'm sure for people who were there it brought back some poignant memories and they sat around and exchanged stories after watching it - but you know, we had our Carol Morley's in Chicago too - one story is the same as the next - will say it might be a great educational tool for girls on the brink - might be a wakeup call to some of them, the men who gave commentary were not exactly complimentary - at points I was very embarrassed and humiliated for her - I've been wondering if she sees it as some kind of purging, or a justification, or in some twisted way a glorification - I suppose if it makes you think after you've seen it, it could be considered a job well done, but the extent of my pondering has been reached so I wouldn't consider it a masterpiece of consciousness raising art either ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 12:00:00 -0500 (EST) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: [idealcopy] apostrophe On Fri, 23 Mar 2001, Wireviews wrote: > Not really. The apostrophe comes from this (seemingly) absurd system of orthography that western devils came up with long ago, in which P'o sounds like "po" but Po sounds like "bo". Why? I don't n'o. But I think the Peking->Beijing thing was the result of the shift from that romanization to a more recent one. a ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 11:50:46 EST From: PaulRabjohn@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Pub-land trivia! Apparently they also appeared on a compilation LP much later called "Light up the Dynamite" with (among others) the Count Bishops, the Flyin' Spiderz, Nick Lowe himself, and... Shakin' Stevens!!! But my question is this: Is "Teenage Head" a cover of the Flamin' Groovies tune? I'd assume so, but you can never be completely certain, can you? I might be interested to hear it, if it is. And if anybody has a copy of "Light up the Dynamite," it's probably worth roughly $20/#15 in near-mint condition. (On eBay, that is...) ///// i'm sure i read somewhere that this snakes single is a flamin groovies cover. but i know very little of what any of those pub bands sounded like i'm afraid. that compilation has been re-issued on cd i think , be nice to hear it.
