Manscape" Oddly enough, that's the exact same order I would choose for Wire's second-period releases. Blimey -- two people on Ideal Copy agreeing about something... is this a first or what? :) C ===== - ------- Craig Grannell / Wireviews --- http://welcome.to/wireviews News, reviews and dugga. And Go Ahead, of course. And maybe Mr. Suit... "I'd agree with Jeffrey that 'Take Care' is by far the weakest Wire related album - it sounds very dated" Oddly enough, I listen to this one now and again and still like it quite a lot. Sure, it pales into comparison compared to Hox, the songs are a bit long and have dated sounds, but the first four tracks are great pop music -- great songs... ABC Dicks Love and Tongue Ties especially. "I also think 'It Seems' has weathered badly and was a bit too weedy (although 'Commercial Suicide' is still a unique & satisfying listen)." Again, I still rate It Seems, although it is obviously overly-sedate. Better Later than Never is classic Newman, although I've never rated Commercial Suicide that highly... 'All Out' has a melody which I think is reminiscent of Autechre, although if comparsions are being made Immersion with Aphex Twin peeping over their shoulder would be better for 'Burn' and 'Versus'. I think all fans of eighties nineties Wire ought to give Autechre a listen - its good to see so many people here like them! >>>>the beats are very conventional compared to Ae, and its more of a guitar record I wouldn't have called Symptoms 'conventional' and had no idea that there was a guitar anywhere near the recording session, but now you mention it, it sounds like he's used quite a bit of guitar. Autechre do tend towards a more multi layered and complex beat approach. >>>>Ooh dear I totally disagree! All their albums are superb. Amber is one of the most beautifully crafted and emotinal records ever made for gods sake! I didn't mean any disrespect to Autechre's early recordings, I just like the more recent ones better and think they are more unique, if that makes sense... I don't have a copy of Amber here and haven't heard it for a long time, unfortunately. 'Chiastic Slide' is my favourite by far. What I was getting at is that to me this was the record where they completely broke away from any familiar techno signatures and dived off the deep end into new sonic territory - yes the earlier recordings are still better than much of the techno around at that time, but I'm no expert here so maybe we could put it down to taste? Paul said 'Chiastic Slide' has the oddest drum programming he's ever heard, which sums up what I was saying really - it's a highly idiosyncratic album which sounds like nothing else before it that I've heard. Is Insiding a good record? Bruce Gilbert records of any kind are always beautifully crafted! :-) Don't be put off by the dance aspect, Mute couldn't afford to give out a free bonus dance troupe with every copy, and the ones that came with mine ran away when I tried to make them do the well behaved atom to 'The Haring'. :-) If you liked Symptoms, especially 'You' & 'Recurring Themes', you might very well like Insiding! I wasn't so much saying that Symptoms & Insiding sound like Autechre, but that I thought they would appeal to people who like Autechre. There are similarities though, and both sound more like Ae to my ears than anything by Dome - which Dome tracks were you thinking of? Dome 3 perhaps? That one certainly reveals new hidden textures with every listen! >>>>If Wire are the British Velvet Underground then Autechre are the British Kraftwerk. I prefer to think of Wire as the European Wire and Autechre as the European Autechre, but then maybe I'm just getting too fast at international typing!! It is fair to say that Autechre have had a massive influence on many melodic electronic beatmongers in recent times. >>>>Is Chiastic Slide typical of Autechre? It's the only album of theirs I've heard. For the first 10 minutes it makes me think "this is the future of music", then I start thinking "what is this racket?" Maybe its the future of rackets!
