"All the coolest pioneers of this noise spirit seem to have made the trip to the extreme, been unable, or unwilling, to push on, and tossed in the towel. SPK and PiL on Elektra Records, for Christ's sweet little boy buttfuck murder's sakes. Alan Vega making a disco 12" with Ministry backing him up. The Stranglers using string sections. Colin Newman putting a kibosh on a Wire reunion because his fucking guru told him to leave music forever. Husker Du sounding like Buffalo Springfield, Bad Company, King Crimson, and Husker Du, all on the same record. Is there something out there that signals "Hey, that's enough. You've pushed the boundaries far enough, time to go home and suck for a while." I want to find out. If Big Black sucks in a year's time, you can assume there is. And I'd like to apologize in advance for any 12" scratch/dub/breakdance remixes we might make." Whats's this pigshit about Colin's guru kibosh then? I think he must be referring to Colin's trip to India. Me said Aaaargghhh!!!! You know, one thing about Shellac is that they never seem to release a decent album. The first album, "At Action Park" is probably their best. I saw them live about that time, and they totally blew away the album. I think it might be due to Steve's production techniques - what works wonders for other bands tends to make them sound stilted and hesitant. Some of their early singles are better. Their second album "Terraforming" is the weakest. It was also delayed for a couple of years, which ought to tell you something. (^_^) Their latest "1000 Hurts" is better than "Terraforming", but weaker than "At Action Park". Another thing to bear in mind is that Steve puts a lot of effort into the Shellac vinyl releases. He does the CD release as an afterthought. (In fact, "1000 Hurts" includes the CD in the vinyl release just to point out how inferior it sounds. (^_^)) A large part of the appeal (in my opinion) of Shellac are the sonic textures they generate. Anything that dilutes those textures dilutes the impact of the songs. Since Steve doesn't pay any attention to the CDs, generally they don't sound as good, hence diluting the impact of the songs. I liked Songs about fucking. Big Black was one of THE greatest rock bands!!! However I reckon the first Shellac album 'Shellac At Action Park' is Albini's finest work. Also Weston (bs) & Trainer's (drums) finest for that matter. It might not push the extreme quite as much as 'Songs About F*!?#ing', but... Tod Trainer (Shellac) is one helluva drummer (he smokes!). As are Zappi of Faust & most of the Magic Band's drummers. Mark said >>>>Faust - I recently bought the box set, and I have to say it's disappointing compared to Can or Neu! Well the first 2 Neu! albums are great but they quickly got tediously twee after that. Faust are just as good. 'Negativland' is my favourite Neu track, but Faust's 'Krautrock' is equally fine. It sounds very different to the next track on Faust IV 'The Sad Skinhead' so how on earth can you call Faust 'one dimensional'?! The first Faust I heard was 'The Faust Tapes' which didn't grab me at all. It was 'Hurricane', the opening track from the late 90s album 'You Know Faust' that sucked me in. Most Faust fans would agree that 'Tago Mago' tops any Faust album from the 70's, but 'Saw Delight' or 'Flow Motion'? No way! Once Holger Czukay took a back seat in Can they got pretty boring (last essential Can track is Czukay's 'Smoke' IMO). The Faust Peel session is very good indeed (despite what Colin said on Totally Radio, it's one long track a few years before 'Crazy About Love' which was not therefore the first Peel session to consist of one long track!). Faust are also very much alive & well & their most recent releases 'Ravvivando' 'Edinburgh 97' 'Faust Wakes Nosferatu' are IMO the best they've ever done. I have a feeling you'd disagree though, Mark. Some say these recent Faust albums are more 'industrial' for want of a better term. Certainly very little hippy shtick remains, and hard propulsive drumming and dense layers of keyboard murk form the basis of their present awesome sound. Speaking of so called 'industrial'... >>>>>>Unknown Pleasures. JD adds a dimension of emotion which Wire go out of their way to eradicate. Here we're in total agreement - 'Unknown Pleasures' never loses its mystery and compulsion. The first time I heard 'Disorder' was a total revelation! I can't understand people who don't get Joy Division, could be something to do with my sharing a birthday with Ian Curtis! 'Shadowplay' was the first bass line I ever learnt to play. 'New Dawn Fades' still sends shivers down my spine every time! 'Atmosphere' is still a tearjerker. They definitely had more substance than most! They only released 2 duff tracks IMO ('Novelty' & 'Failures'). 'The Wire' played Bruce 'Wilderness' when they got him in for Invisible Jukebox. Actually allow me to disagree too! 'He Knows' and 'Heartbeat 2000' were very emotional, I thought. So is 'I Should've Known Better' & so is 'A Touching Display' & 'Two People in a Room' is so emotionally charged it's blown a fuse on my amp!!!!!! If I had to chose one non-Wire CD, right now it'd be Boredoms 'Vision Creation Newsun'. Super Rooting!
