I have a funny story about this. There was a weird show on the PBS network here in America called Videospin. It was these two guys from a local PBS affiliate that hosted a rock show. Initially, it seemed really cheezy and low budget. But, then you noticed that the videos/songs these guys played were amazing. And that they acutally knew what they were talking about. One day they introduced a video by He Said, who they then explained was Graham Lewis of Wire. The video was Could You? And, yes, I did tape it. Pretty amazing video, except for Graham's total inability to lip-sync during one section of the song. On another show, they played the video for In Vivo. The hosts, introducing the video, showed the knick knack that Enigma was giving away to promote the song. It was a Silly Putty (plasticine sold here in the U.S.) egg with a small banner that said Wire - In Vivo. I guess the egg was supposed to represent being In Vivo, or something. Oh, and just for the record, the two hosts preferred 80's Wire to the 70's Wire. They made a point of saying that in the show. Their quote was something like "Wire are like that kid growing up that is awkward and clumsy at first. But, then figures it out and comes back being really cool." Or something like that - it's probably been 10 years (or more) since I watched that tape. (^_^) They also showed the Eardrum Buzz video, which is where I digitized that still picture that shows up on a lot of websites. Yes - you can thank the folks at Videospin for that picture. I still have the tape - one of these days, I'm gonna still-step thru that tape again, find that frame, and make a much cleaner capture. The original was done on my Apple IIgs, which had to take 3 successive passes at the video to do the scan - hence the odd, blurry look to it. I remember it was really hard to find a frame I could use - nowhere in the video did all four members of Wire appear at the same time, or if they did, they weren't looking at the camera. (^_^) I actually made a cool capture for In Vivo, too, but thanks to the Apple's 3 scan trick, the top came out all distorted, so I kept it for my use only. Now that I have the high resolution video digitizer, and 40 gig hard drive, I should really get cracking on this stuff. (^_^) Cheers, Paul ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 10:43:45 +0000 From: Chris.Ray@medas.co.uk Subject: Re: [idealcopy] OffTopic: scanned CD sleeves Sorry. Yes, Could You was a single, with horrible video and didn't trouble the charts. But as those of you who've seen the review know, I actually quite like that album, despite its rather aged sounds. Sort of like He Said's Hail, I guess. I much prefer Soul Mining and Infected. KC Hello folks: I'm curious about this item I saw recently on eBay. It claims 17 extra tracks, some of which appear to be drawn from Peel sessions. There are also a lot of demos for CM tracks. Had to drop out when the bids went over $USD30, but I like to know if anyone has/has heard these items and cares to share their impressions of their qualities, and origins. On the recent Crimson thread, one of the Wire tie ins I found in their music was the interest in repetitive patterns a la Drill in parts of Red, Beat and 3/PP. I was a fan of theirs from the Red/Starless phase, then back to the original, and finally to the Belew et al incarnation, but I had to give up on them when I got fed up with RF's incessant whining and moaning about the burdens of being an arteest and having to put up with those pesky fans.
