The only way where talented people would get good publicity out of the music press is when they could be categorised as belonging to some sort of trendy genre. I like reading good music press (this is a hypothetical statement), but I don't really care if there isn't one. The press doesn't cause things to happen, it just ignores most of them, and they can bloody well exist without it, as they had for the last decade at least. giluz ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 13:17:58 +0200 From: "giluz" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] Creation/NME Mediocre Dross Awards > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-idealcopy@smoe.org > [mailto:owner-idealcopy@smoe.org]On Behalf Of PaulRabjohn@aol.com > Sent: Friday, February 16, 2001 9:04 PM > To: MarkBursa@aol.com; timrobinson@cwcom.net > Cc: idealcopy@smoe.org > Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Creation/NME Mediocre Dross Awards > > blur's "13" was a reasonable attempt to do something different in > a way not a > million miles from what radiohead tried. not perfect , but pretty > good (as > was "blur"). yet blur never quite get taken seriously whereas thom and co > were treated as if they'd just done something unbelievably > original with kid > a. my thoughts were that if your frame of reference was travis > then kid a was > probably an artistic tour de force. but to anyone who'd heard > even a little > of recent electronica then it was hardly anything mind-blowing. i really > think a lot of this is down to the way radiohead have presented > themselves/been marketed , to me it isn't half as clever as > they'd like it to > be. Liked that record, and I've been a devoted Blur hater till then. Good songs with William orbit's superb sound design, just before he sold out and started doing Madonna albums. Same thing happened to me with Primal Scream's last album - that was another band that I hated for years now, who's gone and released a decent album. giluz ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 11:53:40 -0000 From: "Andrew Lumbard" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] An afternoon in the Loft Ian Barrett enquired: There should be a review of 154 circa 14-21/9/79 There is indeed a review in the 22/9/79 edition. Curiously it is referred to as 159 throoughout the whole text! "Ultimately '159' is not easily categorised; there's much too much going on, many too many layers of feeling transmuted into music here.A glib conclusion would be all too easy:'159' as the thinking man's Gary Numan, or '159' as the album Bowie really wanted to make when he and Eno worked on what became 'Lodger'. '159'simply makes 95 per cent of the competition look feeble. Looks like el records or something, all zany/whacky fops.... I don't know about the rest, but Outrageous Cherry are doing a fair job of holding up the detroit rock banner. And if it wern't for reich men's follies we wouldn't have Loveless, or Bob Dylan for that matter. Genius is seldom evident (or commercially viable) before-the-fact. No one, rich or poor, in their right mind would have thought Loveless a good fiscal investment - certainly not a major label. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 17:07:24 -0000 From: "Andrew Lumbard" Subject: [idealcopy] rarity website Not sure how rare some of the items are, but thought you might like to check www.vinyltap.co.uk 19 items on there including 3 inch cd's. Bands Trivia Hey all~ Having followed several of the threads, I found myself listening to PIL's "Compact Disc" (nee "Album") and realizing how much I still liked it! I had heard that Steve Vai was on it, but was that really Ginger Baker on drums??!!? And I noticed that most of the songs were co-written with Bill Laswell. The bass playing is quite cool, whether it is him or not. And on a sort of on-topic note, I saw on Pollstar.com that Roxy Music is touring this year! They are supposed to get to the US Summer/Fall. Having never seen them live and liking SOME of their older stuff, I'm not sure what to make of that...sounds like one of those "our kids are going to college" tours. Does anyone thing it would be a show worth seeing? So barring the Residents getting their tour to the west coast soon, the next concert that is looking interesting is the Soft Boys tour! It is supposed to be in SF in early April and I am very intrigued to see what Mr Hitchcock has in store for us! Hasta~ Stay Ideal and Keep Copying!!!! RJH Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo!
