"Map Reference 41 Degrees North 93 Degrees West" "Wire were always considered "too clever by half", as John Peel once put it, to hit the bigtime as did post-punk contemporaries like The Cure and The Banshees. They were hugely influential, however, their music a template for avant-pop (including Elastica, who virtually re-wrote "I Am The Fly"). "And "Map Reference...", taken from the superb 154 album, was their finest moment. On paper it looks like a typically frigid, arthouse conceit, with its lyric carried by allusions to cartography, latitude and longitude. It's as if the song is celebrating its own draughtsmanship. And yet, somehow, "Map Reference..." is shimmering and sublime - though hardly as moronic - as a terrace anthem, its treated guitar overdubs emitting waves of colour with Pollock-style abandon. Clinical, yet joyous." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 05:21:08 -0800 From: "Bryan Olson" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] ITWINC?/ adam ant? Well, perhaps the license holder may be convinced to re-release it. Of course, I tend to be a completist, but like it all on CD, so I'm biased to that end. It's all wishful thinking. > as with the instant sheds - the format is an integral part of the piece > (i multi-tracked IS1&2 and burned them to cd, but IMO they are not supposed > to sound exactly the same twice I'd agree. However, I could see a CD that had IS 1&2 seperately, and a third track that mixed the two. Then, one could simply copy to tape IS 1 or 2 and play it with it's complement for a different effect each time. Or, alternatively, converting both to wave files and using software to mix the two. That could be even more fun with even more possibilities - allow us the opportunity to mix Bruce's pieceslike he's been mixing other's pieces lately. Ah, well. Let the pipe dreams continue. Also get 8Time which fills the gaps around that period (Cupol 12in/Ends with the sea 7in/3R4). Domes 3&4 are harder going, but if you liked Yclept there's no reason why you wouldn't like those too. From the same period are P'O and Duet Emmo. P'O is basically a 'Dome Band' album - with drums and other collaborators. It's a bit disappointing, but when it's good, it's good. Duet Emmo is a collaboration with Daniel Miller of Mute recs (Duet Emmo = anagram of Dome Mute). A more polished, synthy sound than the Dome albums but in a similar vein. Again, a bit disappointing against Dome 1&2. That was it for collaborative works - from then on Lewis & Gilbert worked alone. Graham did He Said (this is roughly from the same time as Ideal Copy). The first album (Hail) is essential. Don't know about the follow-up (Take Care), as I've only just bought it and it hasn't arrived yet! there's also a compiulation of Graham's stuff in between Dome and He Said called Pre-he, which again, if you liked Yclept, you should enjoy. After He Said graham produced H.A.L.O, which is as commercial as anything he's done as a solo artist. A bit too synthpop for me, but some good songs. Then comes He Said Omala, Hox and Ocsid. Hox is good. Ocsid a bit boring. There are two Omala albums - one is a remix album (Matching Crosses, which I have) and the other (Catch Supposes) is one I'm missing, but on the strength of MC should be a good one. As for Bruce, the earlies stuff for me is the best (This Way/Shivering Man). Later stuff like In Esse (just bought it for 99p) is very hard going. Nor does about 90% of what he plays today!!!!! Besides, most of the kids with guitars these days sound even more out of touch with anger than the insect Devoto, and certainly sound like they feel they have nothing to live up to! (cf. Elastica, Mansun, Blur, Hefner, yawn, etc) Peel's Festive 50 tends to reflect the conservative tastes of his listeners rather than being representative of the fairly broad spectrum of (mostly pop) music he plays. IMO only 2 tracks by The Fall & the radio friendly Shellac song on which Albini used the word 'fuck' in abundance deserved best of year status. PJ Harvey single which is a poor cousin of Patti Smith's 'Dancing Barefoot' obviously got voted for because it was a single, reflecting herd mentality of teenage listeners. Hefner make me switch off the radio & spin my Wire singles! At least Half Man Half Biscuit are supposed to be funny... In the eighties I taped I Am the Fly A Serious of Snakes Ahead Madman's Honey Silk Skin Paws off the Peel show, after 'A Bell is a Cup' he seemed to lose interest... He also rebroadcast the first session around 85-86. The Boiling German Drill session was broadcast 4 times I think. However last year he did play 'Pink Flag 2' from a Wire Tapper comp & remarked that it was the best thing on it. Presumably he would play more if Wire sent him some discs! He also broadcast a fine live recording of 'Lowdown' from All Tomorrow's Parties (shame it wasn't 'Drill' though!) That's one good reason why I thought he ought to get 'em in for a session again. & Gary Numan was presumably covered in electric friends, one of whom may have been called 5, but with it being radio, it was hard to tell. To both of you I'd say that He Said Omala - 'Catch Supposes' contains some of Lewis's best work; spare, minimal, precise electronics; reserved - almost hushed - vocals on all but one track; most of the lyrics typically unfathomable. Get a copy! The remix album I don't find to be essential by comparison, an interesting companion piece is all. I think HALO 'Immanent' is excellent; I think to refer to it as synthpop is to do it a disservice, although it is quite commercial when held up against the likes of Dome, Duet Emmo, et al.
