Hello, > I've never heard of > Daan, > Dead Man Ray, > Flowers for Breakfast > They're all Belgian bands, along with dEUS - is it safe to assume you've heard of dEUS, as you didn't include them in your list above? Daan is the singer for Dead Man Ray. They're both the closest to being like Wire out of these, but they have a much less techno sound than the Wire stuff I"m thinking of (you know - 80's, post 154), but still rather rhythmic and creative in it's own way. Daan has a solo album out, pre-DMR stuff, called Profools, and has just recently released an album of alternates and rarities. DMR has two albums out, Berchem and Trap. Rudy Trouve', who played with dEUS on their first two recordings, plays with Dead Man Ray - but the guitar work he does is not like the dEUS stuff. They're lyrics are somewhat obtuse but make sense in an odd way ("And don't you always know precisely how to find me even when I'm not around. / You seem to like those little creatures crawling backwards on the sidewalks of your mind....", "Toothpaste or glue, what should I do with you? / Roomates or soul mates, I built this bathroom for you...") If I'm not mistaken, they record everything on an analog 4-track, and it does give it a very unique sound...... Flowers for Breakfast has two albums out as well. Tom Pinters, who is one of the driving forces behind FFB, also plays with Stef Kamil Carlens in Moondog Jr. and Zita Swoon. SKC played with dEUS with Trouve'. Their first album, Baron Samedhi Conducts the Onion Philharmonic, is much more like dEUS, with a lot of quirky lyrics ("Put me under your raincoat, and I will burn myself alive....", "Full of onions, onions make my day / Have a soda pop and liquor gonna have a really good day....."). Their second album, Homebound, is minus the sax player they had on their first album and is a lot more pop than rock. You can find more info on these bands and clips of their music at: http://houbi.simplenet.com/belpop There's a lot of cool stuff on that site. I really like the direction Belgian Pop music has taken in the last few years. Then again, someone once told me I like music if it is just obscure.....of course I don't think people in Belgium would look at it that way. I had to laugh when I saw an ad a few months ago on MTV (sometimes I still hope there'll be some kind of time warp that will show me MTV like it was when it first came out - actually showing VIDEOS) about a band who had just released an album, and their promoter came in all excited, talking about how the album was doing really well, he's getting ready to do another pressing of the album, etc. etc., ad infinitum, the album had broken the top ten........in Antwerp. > As for the Hafler Trio, they remixed 'The First > Letter' which was released as a 12" by Touch. Unfortunately I think its now out of print. > Yes, I heard about that one. I really don't collect vinyl, so I didn't get it. Silly me, I'm eternally optimistic that everything will eventually wind up on CD. I think it is out of print. I did just pick up the Hafler Trio Bootleg H3OH from Solielmoon records....that's an interesting piece. Well, take it easy, all.... Consisting of Damon Edge and Helios Creed, their work on the Subterranean and Siren labels was both ahead of its time and unique to itself. In retrospect it could be seen that groups such as Loop took over a lot of the Chrome ethos, but in the late 70s, the Chrome brand of protoindustrial/cyber/spacerock was almost w/out precedent. There was Hawkwind, but Chrome were much heavier and scarier. There was SPK (predisco days) but Chrome rocked. I don't know how much of their stuff is easily available, but Cleopatra put out a 3CD box a few years ago that has most (if not all) of the essentials. Alien Soundtracks, Read Only Memory, Blood on the Moon, No Humans Allowed, The Chronicles, Half Machine Lip Moves are all great albums. After Creed split, Edge kept the name going, but the records didn't have the same intensity. I also rate the Helios Creed solo albums, and the revitalized Chrome after he regained the name following Edge's death. I also enjoyed the Nik Turner/Helios Creed band that toured the Space Ritual 2000 a few years back. - Steve.
