My name is Bryan Olson, and I'm from Sacramento, California. I've been into Wire for at least 10 years or so now, and I'm a bit of an avid collector so I have quite a bit, but all on CD. (I'm still hoping Bruce Gilbert works like Frequency Variations and Instand Shed might one day show up on CD.....) Some of my other musical tastes include Amber Asylum, Laurie Anderson, Syd Barrett, William S. Burroughs, John Cage, Daan, Dead Man Ray, dEUS, Fish, Flowers for Breakfast, Diamanda Galas, Kristen Hersh, Robyn Hitchcock (which is how I came into Wire), The Halfler Trio, Marillion, My Bloody Valentine, Pink Floyd, Primus, Queen, The Residents, The Soft Boys, Jane Sibbery, and of course anything Wire. Here's a brief history: I enjoyed how musically eclectic Queen was at an early age. I was introduced to Pink Floyd by a Middle Shcool teacher who included "Wish You Were Here" as part of her class. I really enjoyed the poetry of it, the symbolisms. I got into some early Pink Floyd and enjoyed the more experimental aspects of it. That pretty much set the standard from there. Robyn Hitchcock was heavily influenced by Syd Barrett, one founding member of Pink Floyd, and his song "Ghost Ship", which appeared on the "Balloon Man" single, sounded a lot lot Barrett's "Opel", which I had on a bootleg at the time (this was before the album of the same name was officially released. I read a review of A Bell is a Cup Until it is Struck in Rolling Stone, and was intruiged by the quotes from "Boiling Boy", I think it was, as the Robyn Hitchcock influence had got me interested in quirky lyrics. I found a used copy of Bell=Cup and decided to give it a spin. At the first few times around it was not what I enjoyed - it was too "beat oriented" for my tastes at the time. But it grew on me, and I decided to try IBTABA soon after that. I liked the idea of reworking live material. As IBTABA is a bit more ethereal, I decided Wire was OK. They soon became one of my favorite bands, as I ventured into more and more albums by them. And they opened up an appreciation for the more rhythmic style music out there. I now have my own musical project entitled "Products of Conception". It consists of a plastic table to which I have contact mics attached + effects (mostly delay and distortion), and a friend of mine joins me occasionally on guitar. We've played one show so far, and it was rather successful. The owner of the record store we played in wanted us to come back. We'll be playing again in February, as they're all booked up until then. Well, I've got to go, work calls. Take care all and until next time, Bryan 93, 93/93 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Dec 2000 14:21:40 +0000 From: Nik Subject: Re: [idealcopy] OT. Mutt." Just to be perverse: the complete signature is 'R. Mutt 1917'. Duchamp's dashing female alter ego, Rrose Silavy, came into being around 1920 and 'took credit' for 'Fresh Widow' among others. I seem to remember a Bruce Gilbert ready-mades connection in the context of his Eline Cout (Feline Court) - about how 'mutilated' words take on a meaning of their own, if I'm not mistaken (Fresh Pain was another example of his, I think - could be in Kevin's book). Given how knowledgeable you folks are, I'm sure it won't be long before someone comes up with a Roxy Music / Cramps > Duchamp reference. Been a Wire fan since the release of Ideal Copy (featured on local TV station show called the New Music which may, or has been, or may not be available in England and on the Continent). When I went to school to study Landscape Architecture in 1991 (I now practice) I met up with a guy who only new Pink Flag, 154, and Missing Chairs- the era of Wire I hadn't bothered with having erroneously written it off as punk. This gent, being slightly older, knew things like BeBop DeLuxe but not the solo Bill Nelson etc, so there were many generational exchanges of material besides Wire. I was in a synth band in the 80s (reel to reel on stage, high hair, etc) and my musical interests range from pop to "art" with some classical/contemporary composers and a dabbling of jazz to boot. Still have some equipment and of course a computer running Acid 2.0. Musical interests perhaps of interest: Bill Nelson, Brian Eno, Air, Chemical Brothers, Orb, Kraftwerk, Massive Attack, Cabaret Voltaire, Bowie, King Crimson, Pulp, Coil, Glass, Bryars, Part, Nyman, Rachel's, Front 242, Joy Division, Talking Heads, Einsturzinde Neubauten (I never spell it right and I am too lazy to walk over to my CD rack), et al Musical interests perhaps not of interest: OMD, Erasure, Yaz, Depeche Mode (Recoil), Numan... most stuff 80s, severed heads, yello, most jg thirwell projects, 808 state, Moby (yeah, yeah, I know), Chrome, Blur Pleased to meet you. Feed back welcome as if response were based on fact. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Dec 2000 00:39:37 -0800 (PST) From: eric719@webtv.net (Eric Strang) Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Intro: Hello from Cheney <<(makes me wonder how many others are out there)>> Okay, I've been on the list for about a month now just reading.
