Another slab of genius! I still haven't made up my mind about it, actually. Like the RFH gig, this release leaves me with more questions than answers. If anyone remembers my comments on the RFH, it left me very confused as to what Wire's actually doing, why did they reform just to replay their 70's stuff, and most importantly - why does it sound so contemporary now. Those are the same feelings I get when I listen to the new 7" (my two turntables are so crappy, so it sounds really lo-fi to me). A-side: Nice loop-editing - actually you almost can't get it wrong with these kinda loops: each one is a tiny masterpiece. Is this the way Wire are gonna work in their current incarnation - recording analogue tracks and then remixing them in an electronically-oriented frame of mind? It's definitely contemporary and it's a very good method to bridge between the past and the present. Still, these were done by Colin alone - I wonder what the other three would have done with it? There's also a sense of an almost self-parody, especially in the techno-ish flipside (the DuggaDuggaDugga CD was the first indication for me that the dugga bit is so similar to house, this one is taking it one step further). Sometimes it feels like Colin's playing one big joke on us. Come to think of it, that's the feeling one gets out of most Wire stuff, so it's definitely a Wire thing. I guess I'd have to agree with Graeme, then. giluz ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Dec 2000 20:15:18 -0500 From: "Cambra, Robert" Subject: [idealcopy] Mr. Faber/ collaborations Graeme sez yesterday: "Now I've half a mind to hitch up to Edinburgh & then hitch back straight afterwards (even after reading Michel Faber's 'Under The Skin' but I'll be safe as I'm too skinny for vodeselisation!)." Is this the same Michael Faber who had to leave this list when he got busy with his writing career? I looked him up on Amazon.com. He's getting very good reviews there. And regarding the discussion on how listmembers might collaborate on music projects, I keep thinking for clarity and progress-- so something good could be done and before we all die of old age--perhaps the few who have clear ideas what they want to do and how they want to do it could just declare it and everyone else could join in as they please? I, for one have never had the chance to see Wire live and am thirsty for info! > And regarding the discussion on how listmembers > might collaborate on music > projects, I keep thinking for clarity and progress-- > so something good could > be done and before we all die of old age--perhaps > the few who have clear > ideas what they want to do and how they want to do > it could just declare it > and everyone else could join in as they please? I concur!! At this time, I have an acoustic guitar, a number of percussion instruments, a computer and no clear idea of how to create any loops or patterns that could be of use. I am really psyched to be part of this collaboration, regardless, so any technical information would be greatly appreciated. And as a final note, on the new 7" single. Not only do I not have a turntable, I don't know anyone who does! So if a digital version of the songs becomes available, I would happily purchase it and I'm sure I represent at least a few others!! (hint, hint...are you lurking, Colin? hee hee!!) Stay wired, all!!!
