Hiya, was in NY this weekend for the Buzzcocks, Buzzkunst, Steve Diggle Band show - - one of the guys that was with us said he'd been shopping that day and saw a Wire tribute CD - he couldn't remember any details except that he noticed a cover done by Buzzcocks - couldn't remember the song - he's a big Wire fan, but it was that time of night, if you know what I mean anyway - we asked Pete on Sunday morning if they'd ever done a Wire cover - he said no - either our friend remembered incorrectly, or it's not Buzzcocks, even though it says it is, or Pete's memory is slipping - - anyone know anything about a Wire tribute CD that lists BC as a contributor? Pete being a Wire fan himself, we asked him if he did do a Wire cover, which one would it be - he didn't answer directly - just said there's too many good ones it would be hard to choose Laurel _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. While I have my own opinions as to what would be 'ideal' I am disturbed at the perjorative nature of some of these communications. Several postings have had a very critical tone regarding others' suggestions. I suggest that before anyone shuts down another's sugestions and ideas they consider exactly what *they* have to offer. No project of this kind will succeed if people insist on being so closed-minded. If your opinions are so strong, I suggest you get a band of your own - you can always recruit from these pages. As I see it there are 3 distinct possibilities for collaboration. 1. Paul's original suggestion of an "Exquisite Corpse" with little preconcieved notion of composition or the others' contribution save a p-re-determined length. 2. An as-yet undefined basis, most clearly delineated by what it is *not*, specifically not a cover tune and not Paul's suggestion. 3. A wire Cover project with contributions or collaborations from the list. Paul and I plan to pursue #1 so long as there is sufficient interest. I think the goals and means are fairly well defined. The somewhat maligned and undoubtably unfortunately named idealcopiests list will serve as a forum for that project. I have unsubscribed all but Paul and myself from that list. If you are interested, please up or re-up by emailing idealCopyists-subscribe@egroups.com. Charles/WMO has expressed an interest (tho not an intention) in 2 and/or 3 given sufficient quantity and quality. I liked these a lot! My favorites are those that work for me not only when I know what they are (that they're Wire-related) but purely in visual/conceptual terms. Perhaps my favorite is Robert Cambra's: on a purely visual level, the shiny, bright greens of the monkey contrast wonderfully with the dull, rough colors of the sandpaper. I think it also displays a sense of humor that seems rather Wire-like: on the one hand, sort of absurd but also slightly menacing. (The menace comes if you imagine how it must feel to the monkey to be riding the sandpaper between its legs!) And the juxtapostion of the purely frivoous (the drinks monkey) with the rough-hewn and functional (sandpaper) works for me as an analogy of the pop or art sides of Wire vs. the aggressive, visceral, even social/political sides of Wire. And of course there are at least two monkey references in Wire lyrics ("the island monkeys"; "a monkey caught stealing") and "sand in the joints." I wasn't able to contribute anything - the furthest my ideas got were fairly obvious: I was going to try to get wave diagrams of the first sounds on _Pink Flag_, _Ideal Copy_, and the RFH show, degrade the copies through repetition (copy of copy of copy of etc.) 154 times each (lots of work!), then do a final (ideal?) copy onto transparencies, then layer the transperencies. Depending how it looked, it'd be either b/w or three different colors. Jeff Ceci n'est pas une .sig ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V3 #363 *******************************
