Paul, Funny you should be on a Sudden Sway tip....as you (almost certainly) know one member of the band was called Simon Childs. Coincidentally a friend of mine has the same name, and is a musician - he was the original bassist in the Vapors(!!!). I saw him last week and asked him if he was the same guy as the Sudden Sway guitarist.... ...and he isn't! Mark << sorry but i need some help here. last night i had a disturbing experience. i shall explain. of several obscure , low-profile acts i've liked , one of the best was sudden sway. i've got all the records but i don't think they ever gigged , they never had photos published either. so i wouldn't have much idea what they looked like , but i do know the singer was called mike mcguire. anyway , last night i was setting the video up to tape "marc" this morning (it had the radio stars doing "no russians in russia" which i'd not heard in 20 years or so) , and i caught a bit of garry bushell's tragic "get a question wrong and this girl will take her clothes off" show. one of the "star panelists" was a guy called mike mcguire , introduced as a "local radio dj and celebrity". has anybody heard of this guy? i really hope this isn't the same MM , this guy had a sort of manc accent and was doing some hugely unfunny tony blair voices and generally being a complete embarassment. but he must have been about the right age and i guess there can't be too many people with that name. anybody out there ever seen what sudden sway looked like or heard of this mike mcguire dj? please say it ain't so. p >> ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Nov 2000 10:03:13 EST From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Coatings Syarzhuk, << After the third listen or so I still can't find a song on Coatings that I like. I like the shifts in the lyrics in the 'Coatings' version, but I prefer the drums much farther back in the mix in the 'Ideal Copy' mix. I agree totally with your statement that 'Madman's Honey' is indeed one of Wire's 'pop' gems. The song reminds me of times when I've been ill with fever and my senses weren't working quite correctly... a slight displacement from normality and reality. Disconcerting but not scary, startling but not frightening. Plus you've just got to love the instrumental segment with the strings and guitar part and the drum roll ever so slowly building to a climax.......ooooo000000OOOOOO! Musical Nirvana!!!!! This is one of those musical moments that defines in a moment, my attraction to Wire. Cheers, Ray Ciscon Remote Office LAN/WAN Support Manager Comark, Inc. Does anyone know, or can any decipher the lyric that Colin is singing in a dreamy, kind of Cocteau Twins-like manner throughout the very end of the song? Is it backwards-masked? If so what does it say? "I buried Paul"? :) Thanks in advance, Ray Ciscon Remote Office LAN/WAN Support Manager Comark, Inc. In order to provide the best level of support, please contact: The I.S. " It is, although as previously mentioned, it is missing from a batch of the American release of the CD. " Crammed does not release Commercial Suicide and It Seems any more, " They were threatening to reissue both CS and IS for years, but that died a death a while back. The vinyl of both these is easy enough to find, particularly in the USA, but both CDs are very elusive. " The question I had was that I recall someone on this list mentioning that 'German Shepards' was done previous to IBTABA. Which album was that on? " Personally, I think IBTABA contains the 'definitive' version of the track, but it also appears on the Silk Skin Paws single, along with a rerecorded Come Back in Two Halves, and the BBC Peel session, which is collected on WMO's Coatings compilation. German Shepherds is not on a de-facto Wire album other than IBTABA. (Only half of IBTABA is 'redone' stuff--the likes of Eardrum Buzz, Illuminated and the Offer also don't appear on other Wire albums, compilations excepted.)
