I agree re. "Bastard". C. Suicide and It Seems remain my least favorite Wire-solo. Jusy not for me, I guess. Probably too pop for my tastes. all the shouty bits on A-Z annoy me , never think that album quite >hits the spot. Insiding and Music for Fruit carry on from the Shiv. Man ... good, but it was time to move on. My first 'solo Wire' experience. Like '154' & 'The Shivering Man' I have it on both vinyl & CD. >'Not To' has less great songs but is still very good indeed esp. 'Lorries' ["You can't sing Czechoslavakia!" Oh yes he can!] >'Singing Fish' is very good too - all tuneful instrumentals. >'Commercial Suicide' is a more mature and rather more serious and personal record and took me a while to get into but I kept at it and I think its quite nice - very European & a definite grower. I'm listening to it as I type because I think its the Wire related record thats been away from my turntable the longest - 'Their Terrain' is a really great song that builds to an emotive climax and 'Feigned Hearing' makes good use of a looped phone ringing. If you like Wire tunes then all his stuff is worth lending an ear to as he never strays far from the hummable. I have spare used copies of 'It Seems' and 'Commercial Suicide' on vinyl - mail me off list if you're interested in getting them. Immersion Colin + Malka = excellent catchy original electronica 'Low Impact' & 'Oscillating' are essential I reckon. Dome I had 'Dome 1' for ages before I really got into it - but once I did there was no looking back! All of its fine stuff - think of 'The Other Window' and 'Lets Panic Later' from the '154' CD as the jumping on/off point and you're maybe halfway there... the word 'weird' has been used in relation to Dome! Dome 3 is my favourite, or maybe the dronier '8 Time' Cd which compiles all of the Gilbert & lewis tracks recorded under non-Dome appelations in the early 80s. Bruce Again, I liked >'The Shivering Man'< which is perhaps his most varied work and easiest entry point to the Gilbert ouevre, but didn't rush out to buy the others for a while. Its worth getting a vinyl copy as the CD omits the superb spoken word piece 'There Are' (no deliverence printed on the finest bank note paper for aluminists). It wasn't until the Beekeeping days that I heard another Gilbert disc, the original genius of >'Ab Ovo'< which is utterly essential and is my favourite 'solo' recording if you hadn't guessed! If the 'shifting blocks of sound' aspect of Wire appeals then 'Ab Ovo' is a must. >'Music for Fruit' is very finely sculpted beat meets electroacoustic composition with a beautiful pop song tagged on the end. Excellent evocative stuff indeed! >'Insiding' is very beat driven extended work for dance and is recommended if the others tickle your fancy. >'Orr' is a collaboration with Robert Hampson (Main) & Paul Kendall (Piquet) using processed guitar sounds and is well worth hearing if 'Ab Ovo' leaves you wanting more. >'In Esse' is very noisy but has an illogic all its own. >'Frequency varation' is just that - 2 blokes fiddling with oscillators. After about 7-8 listens some kind of logic emerged but I'd say its more of historical interest, being Gilberts first recordings from 74 - one for the bees! AC Marias The album is nice avant pop - the riff to 'Just Talk' alone is reason enough to hear! I felt quite elated after hearing this on the radio and playing it on my guitar for ages and getting completely hypnotised - only later did I find out that Bruce played it, which I felt vindicated my Wire-ness. Edvard Graham Lewis Since moving to Sweden Lewis has delivered the goods - He Said Omala is lyrically the best recent Wire 'solo' project by far but musically the more upbeat Hox CD and the more experimental Ocsid are even better. They were only pressed in editions of 300 each and are nearly gone so you'd better rush to get them! Perhaps it's easier to tell you the solo recordings I feel are less then essential... Duet Emmo album is very good except for the title track which is IMO the worst Wire related track ever simply because I hate Daniel Miller's vocals. Luckily he doesn't sing on the rest and side 2 is nicely droney. He Said 'Take Care' & 'Hail' have dated very badly. Colin's 'It Seems' is alright, but a bit light and fluffy. HALO 'Imminent' has some great tracks, especially the more Domelike 'Sick and Tired on a diet of too much' and 'Eclipsed' & the LFO remixes thereof, but has dated too and a lot of it is rather samey, although having said that I only heard it for the first time a few weeks ago so it might yet sow and slowly grow... What is Albini doing with Wire? From what I've heard, Wire basically recorded a version of their current live set in Steve's Chicago studio. They were planning on releasing it, but Steve's been so busy, it might not happen now. Or something to that effect.
