Much as I love 'D&E' period Wire, I've always been a sucker for Not To. Definitely my favourite solo Wire work. ///// current thoughts on wire solo (must add my bit) colin ; "bastard" has grown on me more and more , as have the 2 crammed albums. none of these were particularly instant but with time i seem to play them more. all the shouty bits on A-Z annoy me , never think that album quite hits the spot. graham ; i did someone a halo/hso/hox compilation at the weekend , there really is some fabulous stuff in there and i suspect a lot of people just don't know how good these are. totally recommended (especially hso/hox). whereas ocsid is a bit dull. bruce ; agree that ab ovo / shivering man are the 2 to go for. and avoid in esse like the plague. rob ; well i bought that fad single..... p ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 12:57:50 +0200 From: "giluz" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] Solo Wire > colin ; "bastard" has grown on me more and more , as have the 2 crammed > albums. none of these were particularly instant but with time i > seem to play > them more. Crammed albums are great - actually I prefer Commercial Suicide, 'cause it's got those unique orchestral instruments. Album was very surprising when it was released. It Seems has some great songs, but suffers from some naff 80's sequencer sounds - I think it was one of the 1st albums sequencers were used so extensively - one of the 1st ones where you could actually recognise that the bits are played by a machine. Colin's followup to Bastard was a 12" vinyl (now available on CDR via ~swim) called Voice - I found it even better than Bastard. Judging from the new stuff from the Swim Team compilation, the new album would even be better... giluz ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 08:19:37 -0800 (PST) From: John Roberts Subject: [idealcopy] on topic? For me barely a bum track. Having seen the video for 'B' I'd love to have seen one made for 'S-S-S-Star Eyes'. The standard was high, as were my expectations for 'Provisionally Entitled...' - I was disappointed. The absence of Newman's voice was a big minus point for me. That particular hangover has meant that I have not so far bothered with 'Bastard.' Commercial Suicide was marvellous. I had no idea that he was making records again, and to me it was obvious that some degree of pain had been involved in the inspiration behind it - not something one can easily detect in most of his other work. I've never tracked down 'It Seems' when I've had the money to acquire it, and have not heard one single track from it. In a sense that's infuriating, but also quite exciting, as I WILL get round to it one day. I always thought it was stylistically similar to Commercial Suicide, but all this talk of sequencers suggests my preconceptions are misconceptions. Lewis/Gilbert Best Gilbert - The Shivering Man; I recently acquired Ab Ovo, but have found it rather difficult. I need to give it more of an airing, and although I have a wide open ear for sonic experiments, I found myself willing the final track to end - at 12 minutes I relaxed as there could only be a couple of minutes left; at fifteen minutes there surely couldn't be much more, etc etc - length per se is not a problem but this really tested my patience Best Lewis; for me, at the time, Hail was a revelation. The marshalling of disparate sound to create pattern and texture is in my opinion Lewis's forte, and although the technology has obviously moved on leaving the work sounding, to some, dated, I still consider it to be criminally overlooked. Take Care was a disappointing follow up, a little lifeless. HALO was a return to form - 'Skip The Sausage' a classic. He Said Omala - Catch Supposes contains 'Solid or Vanish' which for me would justify this record's existence on it's own. Hox grows on me. I look forward to whatever Lewis might do next. As for Lewis Gilbert collaborations 'Like This For Ages' heralded great things to come. Dome 1/2/3 contain about a side and a half of first rate material between them (I think it's the opening track from '3' - can't remember the title, can't find my copy - a kind of military snare roll throughout, vocal detritus added by Lewis and Conway - which I haven't actually heard for about 12 years, but I find rolling around in my head most days; not sure why this should be so). Duet Emmo and P'o took me years to acquire, and were unfortunately something of a let down.
