The one you'll all be really interested in, I hope, is an interview conducted prior to the Garage Sunday reversed romp. This URL will open the Wire related menu - http://www.webinfo.co.uk/crackedmachine/wirindex.htm And this one will take you straight to the May 2000 interview, should you be suffering information overload and disinterest in past glories - http://www.webinfo.co.uk/crackedmachine/wireiv.htm I've also added quite a bit of info to the Bruce Gilbert page, turned Colin a lovely shade of yellow and put up some 78 vintage words on the 'Pink Flag' album, which amongst other things includes the lowdown on '12XU'... Well, I'll reserve excitement about the Wire single until Nov 13th when i hear it - although I must say I think it would've been nice if Bruce and Graham could've had a bash at a remix or two. Someone's probably supplied this trivia by now, but the 'C' in BC Gilbert stands for Clifford. Colin's middle name is John... MZUI: I picked up a copy of this for a fiver the day Bruce did his distortion thing at the Parallel Series night. I'd certainly not pay $60 for it (or any other record for that matter), and I'd say that this is the most extreme and unmelodic Wire related album except perhaps 'In Esse' & 'The Haring'. Bear in mind that the album consists of recordings of the public making noises with Gilbert, Lewis & Mills Waterloo Gallery installation, later edited and juxtaposed. I think its a lovely bit of art, and very good for mixing during home Beekeeping sessions. Congratulations to Paul Rabjohn! Might see you in Edinburgh, but I'm not sure yet... Lock up your hats! G’day from Australia There have been a few requests lately for the silent majority on this list to post. A couple of the topics recently as well as the on/off topic argument have prompted me to offer this my debut posting. Sorry if I waffle on- just skip to the end if you are busy!! HOW I GOT INTO WIRE….. I am perhaps the only Wire nut in Australia (??) Being in the post 40s age group (just!) I am still living in the vinyl era, in fact I live in a bit of a time warp. Being sufficienlty obsessed about a relatively obscure group like Wire to the point of being on this list is a strange thing. I guess we all come to it through different pathways. I attended University in Brisbane Australia (home of The Saints) as a lad in 1977 and 1978. Over here in the antipodes we got the Punk Rock experience ‘second hand’ pretty much only through import record releases and out of date copies of NME. I was at that time a ‘volunteer announcer’ for a few hours a week on the Queensland University radio station 4ZZZ. This little known (unprofessional) radio outlet was a pioneer in Australia: We could play anything we wanted (in a rock style anyway), and were virtually the only radio station in Oz (certainly in Brisbane) playing Punk or New Wave music. I used to combine songs from the station’s record library with cuts from my own purchases. I am still one of the few people in Australia with original copies of singles/EPs like Buzzcocks ‘Spiral Scratch’, Chelsea’s Right to Work’ and the like as well as albums from punksters from the Pistols (well, lots of people have that one) to X Ray Spex, The Drones etc etc and OF COURSE Wire. Which brings me to the point: to me ‘Pink Flag’ was THE best of the bunch. I think I played the title track on my radio shifts more than any other song! I bought the next two albums (Chairs Missing and 154) and grew with the band, although I must say I rated ‘Document and Eyewitness’ as one of the worst live albums of all time! I drifted away from the band for a few years, but am back now with a vengeance, becoming something of a completist/ collector. E bay makes it a lot easier out here in Australia, although the Post Office must love me! FAVORITE WIRE SONGS (not necessarily in order!)- Pink Flag, Reuters, I Should Have Known Better, Ambitious, So and Slow it Grows, Pump (‘He Said’) OTHER MUSIC OBSESSIONS…. Alice Cooper (the band not the solo years), Virgin Prunes, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Radio Birdman, Joy Division and Nico (the latter interestingly in view of recent posting- My wife calls these two my ‘suicide music’) and Australian Progressive and Heavy Rock from the 70s including Buffalo, Tamam Shud and Master’s Apprentices (don’t ask) MUSIC I USED TO BE OBSESSED BUT AM NOT NOW….this could have included Wire(!???)… Creedence Clearwater Revival, Pink Floyd, and Kevin Coyne (I saw Kevin as support act to Country Joe and the Fish of all things: it was such a great experience –Kevin that is, not Country Joe- that I went out the next day and bought 6 of his records!) Three recent themes on the list are- 1. ‘Who cares about people’s experiences at gigs 10 years ago’ 2. Is Progressive Rock crap or what…? 3. Off topic versus on topic- The road to Wire obsession is paved with many surfaces. Older devotees like me can remember that distant time- Pre-Wire. If the excesses of Prog Rock were the catalyst for ‘back to basics’ punk and hence the beginnings of Wire (Is Wire a product of the Sex Pistols?….discuss) don’t forget that some of us listened to Prog before Wire even existed (or indeed was even though of in more ways than one!) We all carry the baggage of our musical tastes. I personally find it rather fascinating getting some glimpse into the parallel interests of fellow Wire devotees. There are no doubt as many different stories as there are members of this list. Experiences that are ‘strong enough in the memory to warrant recall’ are important parts of the jigsaw that leads each individual to membership of this list. Our particular obsessions and preferences in music are shaped by many ‘happy’ experiences. I still love Vinyl because of that whole feet-up-on-the-couch-studying-the-record-cover experience that only record junkies understand: CD artwork just doesn’t seem the same. Don’t limit postings to STRICTLY on- topic- The minutiae of various band members’ current doings would certainly not be enough to sustain interest on a list like this and all that’s left is gig reviews- that we can get elsewhere, quicker and better. Anyway enough rambling, just thought I’d join the club! _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
