I bought the boxed import Mott the Hoople "All the >>Young Dudes" >>retrospective yesterday, and I recommend it as a reminder that >>this was one >>great band. What's impressive is that they maintained their >>English >>identity while scoring big in the States with "Mott" and "All >>the Young >>Dudes." A good hardworking (glitter) outfit, and catchy tunes, >>too. Here we go again... I often wonder (no I don't)about the size of some people's prog rock umbrella, and what happens under it. There are easy slagging targets like ELP, but as I remember it, back at school in the seventies, the people I knew were able to decide for themselves what was good and what was bad music in much the same way as people do today. I'm saying this because the "prog rock" phrase can be used by some to diss a decade, The arguement from your man above about the 70's is in reply to a prog rock posting. Eno Fripp Faust etc,new music, but for instance, would you group King Crimson in the prog rock camp? Where do you draw your retrospective line? Theres no point, there was good and bad rock music, pop, glam, whatever, inthose days as now,you took your choice. I've admiited before that I went through a period with bands like Gentle Giant on my playlist and even Yes (despite never being keen on Jon Anderson's vocals). There may have been people who avoided all bands who experimented with orchestral instruments and synths but I can't remember any. Much of what I liked then has been rehashed recently by bands like the Super Furry Animals and Blur, who achieved an almost identical sound with a bit of scrubbing for the late nineties. Its a daft argument but if you are going to scrape the barrel with a whole decade then I would nominate the 80's rather than the 70's. I recently bought someone's old record collection for next to nothing at a jumble sale, there was much good stuff from the 70's and 80's but the LP's I've played most from it since have been Hawkwind. It throws Gentle Giant, Hatfield and the North, Henry Cow, Yes, ELP, Faust, Amon Duul, etc. into one collection, and I think it is excellent. I agree with you, Alan. Yes and ELP would go over the edge (so to speak) and become bloated, but, carefully selected, they still make for good listening. No King Crimson, though, and, again, Fripp and Eno (who's represented by Early Roxy Music) were making timeless music during that era. The only flaw of the boxed set: ELO's "Roll Over Beethoven." You know, I think Wire was instrumental in incorporating certain aspects of progressive music back into the mix, following Johnny Rotten's rejection of everything having to do with progressive rock (wearing desecrated Pink Floyd t-shirts, etc.) You don't think "Pink Flag" is a sly play on Pink Floyd, do you? They were both on Harvest records, you know.
