I highly doubt that people would download from you on a regular basis, unless you have some very rare songs. Most people are going to go for the fastest connection and 56K is pretty much right on the bottom of the food chain as far as connection speed goes. You could unshare all your files and then no one would be able to download anything from your computer. It goes against the spirit of the thing, but at least your meager bandwidth wouldn't be sucked away. I have had ADSL for about a year, and I used Napster intensely for about six months. Now I only use it occasionally. I use it to search out songs I like where I don't want to buy the whole album. Like "Don't Answer Me" by Alan Parsons Project, "Don't Fear The Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult, and "Dot Dash" by Wire. I usually use my FTP server to acquire full albums via MP3, and if the albums are really good, I will buy the CD. My CD spending is pretty much the same since using Napster. I just make better choices now. Here's the url: www.reason.com/0010/fe.bd.rage.html It's an article by Brian Doherty, an associate editor at Reason Magazine who also runs an independent record label, Cherry Smash Records. It brings up good topics on both ends of the political spectrum, and talks about the two most successful hard-core political bands out there now, Chumbawamba and Rage Against the Machine. Give it a read... if you have any thoughts about it that may relate to Wire, post them to the list, otherwise, you can yell or scream at me via email! Please don't flood the list! One of the main points of the article categorizes musicians/bands as either artists or proselytizers. I'm of the opinion that Wire on the whole preferred to be artists first, and never politicized their music to a point that it was polarizing. RATM, on the gripping hand, are hard core proselytizers.
