I saw that for sale at a store in Lubbock, Texas. It's probably still there if anyone wants to purchase it. The cost was something like 20-30 USD. Of course a lot of good that'll do ya if you don't have a DAT player! At least you can find 8-track players at garage sales. I can't remember The Call - if what I think I'm remembering is them, it's pretty lame - and I have one old cassette of Wire Train that I never listen to - a couple of good moments, that's it - but I think you underestimate Translator. The first two albums were both pretty damned solid; I know people who swear by the last two, but for me the songwriting got weaker and the guitar playing got more...guitar-player-like, if you know what I mean. The thing that sets Translator apart "mid'-80s SoCal earnest 'college rock'" (dunno 'bout "earnest") is that they had a more adventurous sense of harmony and rhythm - moments in "The Dark Region" and "My Favorite Drug" suggest the guitarists had done a lot of listening to Gang of Four...an interesting element to add to the mid-eighties guitar rock sound. Nice vocal blend too, if you're into that sort of thing. And then... I finally got off my butt and got my copy of _It's All in the Brochure_ (thanks Miles!) and, following our list-owner's excellent advice, played it very loud on a reasonably decent stereo. And indeed, it impressed more in this fashion than it had the night before in my car. It's interesting to compare it to (my memories of) the Chicago show three months later: I'd say the band's subsequent touring tightened their mesh, and Newman's vocals grow more assured through the set. A few minor gaffes - - Gotobed noticeably speeds up a minute and a half into "Pink Flag," and both the beginning and the ending to "12XU" are a bit fuzzy - but mostly, it serves notice that Wire were back. The arrangements turn nearly every song into a species of drone, one or two chords at most, even where the studio versions had more. Probably the coolest thing throughout is the incredibly huge, pulsing sound Lewis gets from his bass - since Newman and Gilbert are mostly setting up repetition in the guitars, Lewis often gets the role of sonic disruptor, adding little surprises like the off-center note he hits repeatedly in the last half of "Pink Flag." He's actually the busiest player in the ensemble, and with that giant tone, playing a bunch of eighth-note runs really rumbles the floorboards. I only wish they'd included "Mercy," which was the highlight of the Chicago show for me. Oh yeah - and Gilbert's guitar on "Lowdown" just rips. Damn - I hope that Albini project gives rise to *something*... Jeff Ceci n'est pas une .sig ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V3 #282 *******************************
