So *of course* his > productions for America et al are not going to be as good: they're nowhere > near the league of Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, and Starr as creative, > experimental musicians. It's not only the other musicians that lacked the genius. There's a strong element of timing here, which is very dominant throughout the Beatles' career. Lennon, McCartney, Harrison & Starr themselves didn't do any solo project which was better than what they made together (with the possible exception of Lennon's Plastic Ono Band, perhaps). The same goes for the McCartney albums produced by Martin. The whole Beatles story has a very strong streak of being in the right place at the right time. As for Martin being the 5th Beatle - I don't really care if he was the 5th or 4th and a half member, but he was definitely there, defining the role of producer/engineer in the same way that the Beatles defined the role of popular music. But while the Beatles were an integral part of 60's pop music, together with other artists, there wasn't another producer at the time you could compare to George Martin. Other great producers were producer-musicians, like Brian Wilson or Frank Zappa, which isn't the same. Finally, production is much more than writing musical orchestrations. It has a lot to do with sound and mixing and effects. Martin's role as an arranger was very fascinating, but far less revolutionary than what he did with the studio aspect of the Beatles' work. giluz ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 06:08:08 -0700 (PDT) From: kevin eden Subject: Re: Celebrating DOME on WZBC WZBC show has now got three extra hours for the show, so it will be starting at 7PM Boston Time (eastern daylight time) rather than ten, and will run until 1AM. ===== kevin eden wmo, po box 112, stockport, cheshire, sk3 9fd, uk wmouk@yahoo.com http://wiremailorder.com/ "dreams that money can buy" __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
