Hmm...maybe commission an update of the Wire bio on his label's website? House a few homeless people? Now there's a thought - does anyone of you know about a record company that actually uses parts of their profits to do something charitable or - oops, I said it - political? The only example I could find so far is the Bertelsmann Foundation (of the BMG multinational conglomerate) who seems to be vaguely involved in 'promoting international networks' and work on university library systems). Probably terribly tax-efficient... >Look out for The Lost Non Tapes appearing. > Nah. Too obvious... Nik whose 4-year-old son also happens to like Wire. Being woken up by a medley of 'Drill' and Ms Dietrich's 'The boys in the backroom' has its charms. He even named one of the Pokemon on his gameboy 'Duggadugga', and I am slightly tempted of getting this printed and hand it in for Malka's project. On the other hand, I unearthed a copy of 'Manscape with Beasts' by wildlife photographer Barbara Norfleet (incidentally published in 1989). It contains still-life pictures focusing on the interaction between wild animals and the leftovers of so-called civilisation, among them a tableau of a mute swan with an empty coke bottle... If I had to pick an animal to represent Wire, I'd go for one of the elephant seals that can be found along the coast of Monterey, California, in Winter. Not just for their sleek, majestic beauty, but also for their incredible trademark sounds - like a cross between an amplified old coffe machine and an industrial-strenght vacuum cleaner, only better. Perfect. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Jul 2000 09:16:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Joseph Silber Subject: Hating Summer On Sat, 22 Jul 2000 02:00:21 +0100, Tim Robinson Didst expound upon the subject: I Hate Summer >>Bastard hell I hate Summer! Its either raining or muggy and humid (like tonight) and there is sod all going on! << Here in San Francisco, it's foggy and chilly (our week of summer in May was augmented by one in June and if we're lucky we'll get another one in October) and tonight my major choices include Sonic Youth (at the Warfield theater across the street from my new apartment), Indigo Girls across the bay at the Berkeley Greek, and Einsturzende Neubauten at the Fillmore. Have been caressing the EN tickets in my wallet for weeks. >>Its the silly season folks and that means no gigs, anywhere ever for months! That decrepid old radio station that used to be Radio 1 desperately tries to capture the yoof vote by making constant references to 'Avin it in Ibiza like a trendy Vicar. Bring back 'Ooh' Gary Davies all is forgiven. (Apologies to non British listees to whom that last sentence will mean as much as every sentence David Letterman has ever said in his entire career means to me.) << Well the radio station that used to be semi-decent here (KITS) had its liver ripped out about five years ago when Howard Stern took over the morning show and it was all downhill to limb bizkit, Blink 182 and a whole scad of yoof music I just don't get. (I like some metal and I like some hip hop, but the ghastly hybrids out there now make me wonder if it's music at all. Kinda like my mom would feel about Wire). Oh, and David Letterman has never made sense to me either and I remember when his show was on weekdays at noon and was actually occasionally funny (1981 or so, I think). Even more off topic - - in the late 70s, the Starland Vocal Band (Grammy, best new artist: Afternoon Delight, 1976) had a variety show which Mr. Letteman hosted. Scary. Flipping channels and saw that on VH1 a few weeks ago. >>I don't know what its like where you are but here in England there are simply no gigs, and a quick look at the papers reveals the only forthcoming gigs are by Roachford (Seriously past sell-by date R&B Wannabe So mid 1980s it hurts) and the bloody Waterboys (Hello? Have we been transported back to 1985? Who will reform next? Five Star? Musical Youth?). << Yeah - other than the aforementioned gigs tonight it's pretty bleak at this end. I might grab tickets to the GoGos/B-52s show now that the Psychedelic Furs are added to the bill. It's nostalgia time, hit it. I wonder if Adam Ant will tour again? >>>This is presumably because most touring bands are doing the Festival circuit, and of course the Students have all gone home for summer which means no bands are coming to town! Boo! Roll on Autumn with its wind, rain, cold and weekday nights with a pint of warm lager in hand, watching the latest indie hopefuls banging their heads on the ceiling of the Star and Garter or The Roadhouse. <<< Yeah, um, that too. >>>And no one is releasing any records either. And so with nothing else to spend my money on (**wire content coming up**) I have no choice but to purchase the complete works of G Lewis and BC Gilbert........aaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggghhhhhh!! <<< Oh, yeah. That's what this list is about - you may want to grab something by Matmos - weird cool art rock duo that opened for Wire one of the two nights they played here in May. My wife and I sat next to the mother of one of the band members. "Quasi-Objects" is quite good, but the live set was better. I read that Mark Kozelek (of Red House Painters) has a new album, but I've not been able to find it. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- music: The Church: Gold Afternoon Fix text: Herman Melville: Moby Dick film: Theremin-An Electronic Odyssey malachimulligan@excite.com _______________________________________________________ Say Bye to Slow Internet! http://www.home.com/xinbox/signup.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Jul 2000 13:24:39 EDT From: "Syarzhuk Kazachenka" Subject: Legion of Green Men Just picked up their first album on eBay.
