Steve. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ They use the head and not the fist. - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 21:49:24 EDT From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Great gigs Great gigs... Well here's a few of mine. I was a very regular gig-goer right through the 80s - several times a week for the first part of the decade. Never done a Hornby-style gig count, but it must be well over 500, maybe pushing 1,000.... Ah well, it's kept me off the streets! The Clash, Lancaster University, 1/80. Only time I saw them... The 2-Tone tour, also Lancaster, 10/79. Immense fun. The Jam, Lancaster again, 11/79. Loudest band I have ever heard. Weller miserable as hell. Superb. Joy Div, Preston 2/80. The one on the CD, where everything breaks. The Cure, Liverpool Uni, 1980. The week 17 seconds came out... a week later, in the same venue, I saw Teardrop Explodes, Treason line-up. Two superb gigs. New Order, Beach Club, Manchester, 7/80. 1st gig. on bill to very in-form ACR. Also Blackpool, 9/80 and Chorley 1/81. Loved watching then evolve, and it's such a shame that Hannett screwed up Movement. The Fall, Manchester Uni, 10/80. Someone throws a beer glass at MES. He's straight into the crowd.."Yer fucking ugly twat!!" and decks the bloke. Meanwhile the lads accompany the fight by playing extra hard, and adding extra drum beats in time with Mark's punches. Like Batman. Felt, a small pub in Birmingham, late '80. Like seeing the Velvet Underground. Josef K, Rafters Manchester 2/81. Best gig I ever saw. The Fire Engines, same place a few weeks later. Two sets, one of 15 minutes, one of nine. Searchlights trained on the crowd. Intense. Rafters was a truly great venue - saw many other good things there at that time, including Young Marble Giants and Durutti Column. Bauhaus, Dudley JBs, 11/80. Pete Murphy swinging a strobe light round his head, inches from the crowd. The Associates, Derby, 10/80. Like nothing you'd expect. Like the Peel session, but noisier. Gang of Four/Pere Ubu/Delta 5, Leicester, about 7/81. Awesome. The Wild Swans, Liverpool, 82?. Best third-on-the-bill band that I'd never heard of that I have yet seen. U2, Wolverhampton Poly. In the bar, basically. The Icicle Works, somewhere in Birmingham, early 1984. A band that knew how to play their songs live, ie turned up to 12. Covered radio free Europe by REM as an encore, which was pretty cool. Einsturzende Neubauten, North London Poly, 1983-84. Set fire to the stage. The Fall, Lyceum. Last time I saw them with Lard. Supported by Felt, as a 3-piece, playing an entirely unreleased set. Comsats/Sound/Blue Orchids, Lyceum '82. CN, Venue '82. As near, I thought at the time, as I'd get to seeing Wire. Birthday Party, various gigs from 81-83. Always consistently good. best was probably the Venue (on live album now) wih Cocteau Twins supporting. Likewise Cabaret Voltaire. Venue '82, or Sheffield '83 probably the best ones. The Final Academy, 83. Four-day launch festival in Brixton for Psychic TV, plus guests (inc Cabs, 23 Skidoo etc) and readings by William Burroughs Creation special, Woolwich Poly, 1984. Early Primals, Loft, etc. Jesus & Mary Chain, North London Poly, 85. the legendary Riot gig. Husker Du, Electric Ballroom, 85 Wire comeback in Oxford, 85, plus 6 subsequent gigs - Astoria 88 being probably the best. The Lyres/The Downsiders, TT The Bear's Boston, 87. First time in America, and first gig there, so pretty memorable. Similar to gigs in UK however ;-) The Feelies, T&C2, 89. They could fade out live. Miracle Legion, Mean Fiddler, 89 The La's, Marquee, 89 Stone Roses, ICA, 89 Galaxie 500 - Camden Falcon, and ULU, 1990. Brilliant both times. Teenage Fanclub, ULU, 91. A glorious mess. Velvets, Television revivals, 92 really enjoyed both. Oasis, Water Rats, 94. Yeah I know. But they were a very good pub band. Big Star, LA, 1995. Way beyond what it could have been given Chilton's reputation. the second half of the 90s were by comparison pretty flat. I saw a lot of Britpop bands, few of which stick in the memory. Did enjoy Blur, just before Xmas 96 (or was it 97?) in Brighton. So far this millennium it's been four Wire gigs and the Cure's Wembley farewell. Now I really need to score a Radiohead ticket for next Saturday..... Mark ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 23:01:56 -0400 From: Katherine Pouliot Subject: Re: Great gigs--long post, get ready! Wow, what an impressive list, Mark!! It reminded me of some of my other concerts I had forgotten about (not necessarily because they sucked, just stopped counting a long time ago.) TT The Bears! Yeah, Boston Rules! Best 'almost' concert story--when I was 15 my stepfather at the time worked for a friend who owned a limousine business. They used to work for CBS records, also. Somehow, they did the limos for the Frankie Goes to Hollywood show in San Antonio, TX, (where I lived at the time) and got me backstage passes, t-shirts, etc. My stepfather was to meet me in front of the theater and bring me round back. He never showed up, and I was too young or something to get in. My stepfather didn't want me in there because they were all gay. haha Stepping back into the future again: There was Peter Murphy - solo, about the same time Love & Rockets were touring, funny. The Mighty Lemon Drops were opening for Peter I think. That was the best least-heard-of band supporting a lead act that I'd seen, ever. Saw them at the Orpheum in Boston, and Love & Rockets at Great Woods (now the Tweeter Center). Both in '89 I think. Peter Murphy was like skinny pale vampire man. Goth, anyone? A fun rowdy show at the Channel in Boston, in '88, seeing The Butthole Surfers with The Zulus (the guy from Human Sexual Response's band). That was an amazing experience. The drummer for the BS lit his drum kit on fire. I was in the mosh pit and it was a sweaty tiring affair, but what a rush. I'm only 5'2" and I got elbowed pretty hard in the mouth, busted my lower lip. I'm reeling and the 'gentleman' whose elbow got me was immediately repentant, stopped jumping to lean down and ask me if I was okay, and apologized. All that coming from a tall (OK, I suppose *anyone* is tall compared to me) skinny leatherclad man with a spiky mohawk. I felt strangely comforted! Plus, the Channel is no more, not too much later than that it was canned, I believe it was deemed too "rowdy". Saw some smaller gigs in Boston, at Axis, about '90 or '91, too. One was Happy Mondays and whoever opened for them, can't remember. I know I was right up front, trying to check out the action. It was before the lead singer guy got fat & ugly. haha... The tall skinny dancer guy, Bez or something like that, was jumping all over the place. The crowd was so frantic that I lost one of my shoes, and I was looking for it at the end. Bez came up to me and asked if I was OK (I guess I get a lot of sympathy?) I told him I was looking for my shoe, that I'd lost it dancing in the crowd. He helped me look for a few minutes. He mumbled some unrecognizable British stuff during the search. Never found the shoe, but probably never would hav chatted with Bez if I hadn't lost it. No big whoop, just a funny story to tell. Then saw The Mission U.K. on the tour for the wretched album with Tower of Strength on it, but it was a good show. Went with a guy who got me the tickets, ooh, that was a bad scene I don't want to remember. Memories... Saw Lush and Ride at The Paradise in Cambridge probably in '90 or '91 also. Stayed around after the show and met Lush and Miki autographed my ticket. We exchanged exercise, hair tips and accents. Funny - where are all these bands now??? Good luck with the Radiohead tickets & show! I'd like to be there. that was like 1988. a fantastic show with one jam that went on for what seemed like the whole night. i think 1985 show i saw was at the ritz. also on my list of foggy, but great memories: savage republic/shiva burlesque/bbq killers @ the pyramid, nyc 1988 went for sr, but the whole show turned out to be a real cmj highlight. circle x @ the pyramid around 1988 i guess. tony gets wheeled through the crowd, up to the stage, in a tank of water, climbs out and starts singing, barely avoiding electrocution! pil - every show, even the flowers of romance tour @ the ritz 1982(?) with johnny taunting the crowd from behind the curtain "are you getting your money's worth?" the cars/xtc @nassau coliseum, ny 1980(?) candy-o for the cars, black sea for xtc. xtc were fabulous, even just warming up for the cars. and the cars really did a great show, specially when they did one of their many guitar changes, throwing them off stage, about 20 ft. or so to their roadies-fun stuff! einsturzende neubauten - every show. saw em on their second night @ danceteria, ny on their first tour. by that night the club personnel already knew to have fire extinguishers ready! and loved seeing them looking quite sophisticated on the tabula rasa tour, roseland, ny. the police/the go-gos/oingo boingo/the coasters @liberty park, nj 1982. the weekend, the drive back, the camping out, the pushing...well okay, not the pushing (damn i hate that), but what a memory. too many more to describe, so here's a list: bauhaus @danceteria, 1983 virgin prunes @danceteria, 1983 or 84? "you stay and watch the rest, honey. i'm going home." she knows how much i love "those weird, irritating art films" hehe. anyway, let's go with: ultravox @avery fisher hall, nyc. reap the wild wind, etc...i love the songs, but it was like watching the records being performed. they hit every note, midge reproduced every bend of the tremelo bar perfectly, it was as if robots were up on stage performing. too perfect...hrm, is that a complaint? chequered past @the peppermint lounge, nyc 1982 or 83? half of blondie joins the other half of the sex pistols with michael (?) des barres singing. they played a lot of covers. opened with vacation by the go-gos. um, i implied before that i'm not too critical or picky... rush hehe, i know i know-easy target. the thing i am thankful for is that the spacey jams all those arena rock bands were so good at is what got me into krautrock and post punk indie music. it's just the path i took. that i arrived at my destination is the important thing. anyway, this was the second time i saw them, moving pictures tour. the turn off was that they went into the required 20 minute drum solo during like the 4th or 5th song of the set! idiots!! that may have been the last gig of that type i ever attended. whew! - -paul p.s. on the best and worst list would be: new order/echo and the bunnymen/gene loves jezebel @jones beach, ny 198(7)?- new order...great, echo...great! they opened their set with like 5 straight from crocodiles, g loves j...ugh! i had seen them a few times before this and really enjoyed their gigs. this one just never got off the ground. flat, boring. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Jun 2000 01:41:13 EDT From: "stephen graziano" Subject: Re: Re Great live performances >pil - every show, even the flowers of romance tour @ the ritz 1982(?) with >johnny taunting the crowd from behind the curtain "are you getting your >money's worth?" Then trained back to NYC to see THeads and B52s headline seperate nights at the Wollman Rink gigs in Central Park. That was a summer!! What I remember about that was that the band started out as the four piece, and then after each song someone else would join the group - Bernie Worrel, Nona Hendryx, Busta Jones(?), Adrian Belew (?) maybe others until the stage was packed and all these new hypnotic, grinding groove songs that had everyone dancing like mad after a hot August day out in the sun. And I just remembered Flipper and Glenn Branca (seperate nights) at the Mudd Club. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Jun 2000 01:47:18 EDT From: "stephen graziano" Subject: Re: live performance??
