This was not at all uncommon in the south, and does not single out Jerry Lee as some type of deviant....just paints him as a product of the culture he grew up in. The British had a great deal of nerve to attack Jerry Lee for his marriage to his cousin....as he wasn't a product of their culture and shouldn't necessarily be expected to adhere to their values. Let's also not forget he's a musician, not a spiritual leader. As Jerry Lee said in response to the criticism he received, " I married the girl, didn't I?" As for Jerry Lee being a racist, I can't quite understand that one. His music was entirely derived from black music, and he certainly knew it then and still acknowledges it today....in fact his cousin, Jimmy Swaggart, encouraged Jerry Lee to quit playing rock music, as it was "black devil" music, but Jerry Lee persisted. I was just watching VH1's "where are they now" show on the 80's people like Adam Ant, etc. pretty funny... Sort of off topic, but I just got home from seeing the movie "Gladiator". The movie is epic, and the soundtrack wonderful - Lisa Gerrard singing - it sounds like DCD the whole time. Wonderful!!! Check it out...
