This is something completely different - the fact that the Robyn Hitchcock writes nonsensical lyrics doesn't imply that they're bad. The guy knows how to write, despite the fact that most of the lyrics concern themselves with vegetables or small insignificant animals. But basically you're right - The Soft Boys were great because they made great music and played it so well. giluz ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 May 2000 10:47:00 -0500 From: "webmaster" Subject: RE: CD Storage Does anyone have excessive amounts of vinyl? Of course I do. I built a bin that's "record store style", so you can flip through, however, my overflow has ended up in IKEA's Ivar shelf systems. As for catagorizing, my Prog collection is in the bin, but I have separated Classical, Fusion/Jazz, New Age, Misc and what I call... Post-Prog Rock, which is a rather obvious line, but I'll be damned if I can explain it! charles ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 May 2000 12:22:05 -0400 From: "Minya's a monster..." Musically they were very influenced by Television, and you can hear it in their clean, crystalline guitar patterns that also evoke a 4AD-ish sound. Saw them last year supporting REM (Earls Court, hardly ideal venue) but they have gone too far down the funky French muso-noodling cul-de-sac. I preferred the krautrock sound they had before - and Mars Audiac Quintet is far and away the best Stereolab album. Mark << I spoke with a bloke from New Zealand who said he didn't enjoy a recent S'Lab show in Australia (and he *is* a fan)...He said it was "all wanky" i think he meant "formless" or "tuneless" maybe. I missed them here in Chi a few months ago and the local critics (the rare two who's opinions I *do* respect-DeRogotis and Kot) didn't care for that show either. I saw them in 95 at DC's 9:30 club and was pleased. But that was Mars Audiac Quintet...I'm one of the few that like the old records better. less bass and marimbas, more guitar. >> ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 May 2000 18:30:10 EDT From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: Old Wire / New Wire Paul, Nailed it. That's exactly how I feel about 154. Pink Flag and Chairs Missing are 'of their time' - though CM contains some of Wire's finest songs. So (to a lesser degree) are the '80s albums, while the Wir stuff sounds very much of its time (nothing dates a record like a drum machine). But 154 is of no time. Stand it alongside any good modern "classic" album (say, OK Computer) and see for youself. Mark << i certainly hope the guys decide to continue making music together. i love the first letter, i like manscape alot, and on the subject of nostalgia...not one bit of 154 sounds old to me. that album could be released as new today, and i believe that anyone unfamiliar with wire would take it as being brand new. there are songs on the first 2 albums that are still as fresh today as when i first heard them, but listening to either one all the way through does bring on a sense of nostalgia for me too. >> ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 May 2000 18:50:46 EDT From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: Felt In a message dated 05/21/00 4:07:11PM, you write: << Another fantastic band! Ever-changing line-up (only Lawrence and the drummer are constants). Early work is all guitar-based; somewhere down the line the sound becomes keyboard-heavy (via Martin Duffy, now of Primal Scream). Add Bob Dylan to Lawrence's vocal pallette. Hugely prolific in the 80s - 10 albums (some of them 30-minute, six-track affairs; two of them instrumental). And there are at least four singles compilations. Lawrence is a bona fide pop nutter - since Felt he's made increasingly dismal albums as Denim, and his most recent, as Go-Kart Mozart, is appalling. Heavily name-checked by Belle and Sebastian at the moment - they are to B&S what Wire are to Elastica I guess. If Lawrence reformed Felt he'd clean up in the UK right now. And I once saw them play Outdoor Miner as an encore! Not Me was not released by Colin until the CD reissue of A-Z. It was part of a series of demos (recorded by Colin, Desmond Simmons and Robert in late 1979) but was left off A-Z and Not To. It was picked up by Ivo at 4AD for the first This Mortal Coil album. Until the CD A-Z reissue this was the only version available. As for Belle and Seb., they may affect the same folky tinge, but they can't affect me like Felt (and I'm actually *from* Glasgow!)
