June 10th? at The Riviera... >At least I think that's the date of the upcoming Syouth/s'lab >So someone join in: Is this upcoming show a must see? I'm going to the show mostly cause I'm quite a Sonic Youth fan and haven't ever seen them live, and I have a little more than passing interest in Stereolab (although there such a "chill" band I'd ideally like to see them while sitting on a couch having a drink rather than standing in a sweaty crowd)...I don't care much for Sonic Youth's SYR releases, and am one of those "Sister and Daydream Nation beat any of their 90's releases!" people, but it's a great bill so I gotta go. People were talking about Jim O'Rourke a little bit ago. O'Rourke is going to be playing WITH SY at this show, I heard on bass (Kim? What are you up to???). I also don't know how I feel about this. I love Gastr del Sol and enjoy some of O'Rourkes solo stuff, but do I really want him up there with Thurston and the gang? Hmm. There's a funny little O'Rourke backlash going around Chicago nowadays among some musicians; a few people I'm aquainted with have formed a loose association dubbed Citizens for an O'Rourke-Free Chicago; Obviously, O'Rourke is gaining a lot of noteriety in underground music all over, but if you live in Chicago and like music you particularly understand. He's constantly "collaborating" with just about anyone you can imagine, in popular venues and in a more academic sense with shows at the Museam of Contemporary Art. You just can't get away from him. He's everywhere. I ran into him while leaving his show at the MCA and he seemed quite frightened and timid! Alyce If I had to pick one former of Gastr del Sol, it'd be David Grubbs all the way baby. Mmm. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 06:59:23 EDT From: "Syarzhuk Kazachenka" Subject: Four letter bands (was: In shorter) >Four-letter band names....Good formula usually, but fails when band >name ends in -ush (Bush, Rush, Lush etc). For what it's worth, a lot of Wire's inlays are inaccurate, notably The First Letter, which sometimes misses out chunks of words, and some of the other Mute records (check Manscape's Children of Groceries for a good example). I guess Wire have never exactly been stoic about retaining consistency of lyrics over time (witness Kidney Bingos on Coatings, for example) -- so perhaps they logged versions at the publishers that changed by the time they were recorded. Of coruse, the band have always been one to load their texts with ambiguity, so pehaps it's amusing that the very words themsleves are often up for question, adding another layer. If I know Wire, I reckon they'd probably prefer none of their albums to have any words in to heighten the questioning. My take on this (culled from interviews) is that Wire reformed for the RFH thing because they thought it might be enjoyable, fun even. Then, decided that they didn't want the fun to end just yet (bartender - one more) When they come to after the Garage stint, they'll look at each other in the morning and either duck home mumbling, or (as most of us hope) decide to make a go of it. The reason for the fairly static setlist was a limited opportunity for rehersal and limited technical skills on guitar (at least rusty). In their own words (tho I think they sell themselves a bit short on this account) Wire are not musicians. > Colin used to monitor the list but he unsubscribed, a bit after ther RFH gig. > giluz Colin said he did not make his presence known because he prefered participants to speak openly (not that i think there would ever be a problem there) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? (Note also the "tulip"/medieval Dutch connection making sense, since somebody was obviously studying medieval Dutch painting at the time: "Madman's Honey" alludes to several details of a Hieronymous Bosch painting (the source of thename "Lubert Das"), and on ABIACUIIS, the line "Breughel's cut corners.") I've always done this by band name (so Ciccone Youth is under "C" even though it's basically Sonic Youth, and Dukes of Stratosphear under "D" even thought it's XTC) but I'm thinking of changing this. I have Wir following Wire because putting it before _Pink Flag_ just seems wrong somehow... Compilations/soundtracks/etc.: in its own section after the alpha section, alpha by title. Classical: alpha by label, within label numerical by catalog number. This might seem arcane - but if you've got one CD with, say, Bartok and Stravinsky, where do you put it if you're using alphabetical? You also have multi-composer compilations performed by the same artist (say, the Kronos Quartet CDs), or (more rarely) multi-performer compilations of music by the same composer. No other system seems to make sense - it's fairly easy to remember the label, and then a bit of digging to find the particular selection is pretty easy. (That is, if you can remember what the hell you even *have* - problem w/4,000+ CDs) Jeff Ceci n'est pas une .sig ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V3 #152 *******************************
