If memory serves, The Third Day was the "practice" EP sold at the RFH show ... if it was available last night, I sure didn't see it. They are selling a full CD, It's All in the Brochure, with 16 tracks from the RFH show, 12 by Wire (no new songs, one of which I believe appears on Third Day). And yes, the T-shirts are being sold. Nope, they never popped their heads in. After Colin's set, though, Charles got a few of us in to the dressing room to see the guys (well, Robert seemed to be missing) just before they left, which was vastly appreciated. (When I told Graham that I'd flown up from Little Rock to see the band, he put down his bags & shook my hand, then had a few quips when I mentioned that I'm a newspaper editor. He's rocketed right up to No. 1 on my Dreamy Faves list.) I thought the band sounded great, & the sheer *heaviness* of the redone versions of songs like Pink Flag & Another the Letter (not that they were exactly Minnie Riperton ripoffs to begin with) was revelatory. And as vacuously fannish as I know it sounds, there's nothing quite like finally seeing these guys 22 years to the month that I bought Pink Flag. Still & all, I never got quite the sensation of frisson that I've gotten at certain shows over the years, though in all honesty I think it has more to do with the fact that I'm 40 years old than anything else. Now, maybe if they'd done Ex Lion Tamer or Blessed State or A Serious of Snakes ... Am I delighted to have been at the show? Yes. Was it worth the hassle of flying 1,400 miles round-trip? Yes. Otherwise, I wouldn't have a clue what people were talking about if someone were to mention the "swim" Colin did during the instrumental break in 12XU. I've vowed to do that at work sometime, in the middle of the office. > >First of all, I hated the opening band, Seam. The "seamed" to go on forever, >with their limp Sonic Youth sound. It was mush. Well, occasionally they acheived a decent level of energy, but in general they seemed to owe too much to the shoegazers, who never did much for me. And the 3 or 4 instrumental "dreampop" songs ... as I said last night, as far as I'm concerned it's called "dreampop" for a reason -- it puts me to sleep, & when I'm asleep I dream. > >As for Wire, I had been hoping for some deviation from the set list I have been >following on this subscriber line. And, yeah, I'd love to have this -- he said he submitted it to some label that didn't deign to release it. (I'm almost entirely unfamiliar with Hawkwind, but it so happens that their Quark Strangeness & Charm LP was the first import album I ever bought, while Chairs Missing is tied with SLF's Inflammable Material [bought them in the same mail-order, my first ever for vinyl] for 2nd.)
