["Paul Pietromonaco" Subject: how's the turnout been? In the latest Village Voice, the Irving Plaza is finally running the ad for the 5/15 show up top in the calendar section. Previously it has run in a tiny strip near the bottom - if you weren't looking for it you would never have noticed it. The picture in the ad is pretty funny - it looks about 20 years old, from what I can tell (the printing is so bad that it's a blur). The show isn't sold out yet, and I'm wondering what the turn-out has been like at the recent shows. I saw the great Flaming Lips show there a few weeks ago, and even though that show was sold out, it wasn't uncomfortably crowded, as many shows I've been at have been - you could actually get from one end to the other if you wanted to. Good sound all over too, although the Lips were broadcasting the audio over an FM transmitter and even handed out receivers with headphones to listen, but not enough to go around. And they never mentioned the frequency, so even though I had my own walkman I never got to tune it in. And despite the "no taping" policy, I saw several video and audio tapers in the crowd. I can't wait for May 15! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 May 2000 15:53:07 -0700 (PDT) From: BOURGEOISIE Subject: They've been touring for a while... Wire have been touring for a while now, so I think it is fair to repeat the question...is this just a reunion or is new material that diverges from the comfortable rock band aesthetic being created? I'm aware that there is some new material that is being performed, but what i've heard of it does not diverge very much from their old material. Does anyone think Wire can re-invent themselves, given Robert's no electronics restriction? Robert. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The Wedding Present really never would have existed without these guys, would they? OK, slight change of pace now with Chance Meeting & The Angle & Drone, perhaps reminiscent a bit of A Certain Ratio's & the Gang of 4's approaches to funk ... >> You should have seen them live....... sharp-suited dudes, not a word to the audience. 30 minute sets with 10 classic songs, guitars that made your ears bleed..... They funked up a bit towards the end. Some of the songs were rewritten between the first and second albums with new music but the same words. Don't really see much of a Go4 or even ACR connection...their nearest relatives sonically were the Fire Engines, who I saw play two sets one night, one of 15 minutes and one of nine.... Hello, Well, I've been lurking on this list for about six months now, so I thought I ought to introduce myself... Anyway, my name is Steve and I am a Wire fan. I've been listening to Wire for nine years now (since the age of 14), when I purchased a promo single of So and Slow It Grows at a record store in Rochester, NY. A few months later, I met a future bandmate and huge Wire fan. It was all downhill from there (at least as far as my wallet was concerned). Other music related favorites include Guided by Voices, Severed Heads, Joy Division, Nick Cave, Archers of Loaf, Cabaret Voltaire, Camper Van Beethoven, The Grifters, Velvet Underground, The Wedding Present, Girls Against Boys, Band of Susans, Underworld, Swell Maps (you probably get the point). I currently work in Toronto, Ontario, but regularly commute back to Buffalo and Rochester. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has ordered tickets for NYC through Ticketmaster online. I ordered two tickets as soon as they were released and received them promptly. A week later, I ordered four more, and have not received them yet (the site says they have not been printed, but will be shortly). Has anyone else encountered this? I also have a spare ticket available if anyone should need one (assuming they send them to me). Well, thanks for amusing me for the past couple of months. I look forward to seeing a large group (all things being relative) of rabid Wire fans on the 15th. take care, Steve Mindy Steven Mindy "I'm flying south with a running start from the roof of my house" - Polvo ICQ 43263895 AOL IM - slinkingcrutch support your local technician: http://www.mindspring.com/~mosfet/index2.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 May 2000 20:53:36 EDT From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: Wire in LA Tony, << How come Bruce looks so old and not well?
