It has been repeatedly voted Nightclub of the Year at the concert industry's annual Pollstar awards due to its forward-thinking audience-friendly design, flexible capacity, excellent production and sightlines, and strong programming. While the neighborhood is a bit sketchy, you will not be disappointed. ***************************************************** David T. If not, I'll give > you a ride that's very cool of a person. I parked right across the street from Metro two January's ago in the lot with some combo hotdog/taco hut in front*, I'd gladly give someone a short ride to ville any day, if they could stand me (us) lounging around for awhile (I'm never in a rush). that area is very harmless, tho I've never had problems in any big city, and only been to the Metro like 5 or 6 times, for Einsturzende Neubauten, the Cure(went for the Cranes), some silly DJ stuff, Stereolab(yawn), Tortoise, Alex Paterson (+ 2 for shows at Dbl Door like Holger Czukay!)... plenty of cabs come and go or wait; easy to hang around, even when it was cold... you might want to share a cab with someone local so they can suggest the quickest way, to not be jipped (guess cabs might have minimums tho). the Metro block is right by some blocks of houses too if I'm not wrong, not a "seedy area" at all. feel the same way about Detroit and the area being(not as quaint tho) quite 'user-friendly'(like St. Andrews Hall, Pontiac's Clutch Cargos, 7th House, St. Theatre, etc); wondering why Wire are not doing St Andy's or other near there or even what used to be cool in Kalamazoo, the State Theatre there (only saw the Banshees there). Has anyone spoke about this onlist(will recheck the digest archives)? I agree that Chicago is more appealing than Detroit. Tho I'd gladly pay to see Wire (as the four of them together) play live in someone's toilet or basement or junk heap. I'd reckon Toronto fans would appreciate the closeness to Detroit/Windsor also; yet I'd probably opt in for a Toronto gig, even tho it's atleast twice as far for me! (*)Detroit does not seem to have the same late nite offerings as Chi tho, like the combo all-nite joints with selections including "burrito's or hot dogs, taco's or shishkabob, pizza or souvlaki/vegi pita's anyone?" (atleast the ones you can walk into) and Dunkin Dounuts you can actually sit inside for coffee... I'm also a push-over for coffee shops and coffee houses, perhaps Chi land has way more of that (esp more than Toronto, they didn't seem to know what a "coffeehouse" is). Anyways, I'm guessing the Metro (ex cabaret metro) has done so well because of its nice safe harmless location, not just the Marlboro sponsorships... take care, mr. e (or mr. j) I'd like to pogo. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 09:06:24 -0600 From: "MackDaddyD" Subject: Re: chicago drill//why not detroit? too smelly? not enough pogo afficiendo's? some 10-odd years ago, following the last wire show at metro, an enthused fan (me) ran into bruce sipping a pint in the basment (smart) bar at metro. what a great show!, i enthused, and a sold-out house and all. bruce replied that they had played for 4 people the night before. i thought he said it was in iowa, but someone else told me it was milwaukee anyways, i think the band has good memouries of their last chicago visit, and that may have helped in the choice of venu plus, thier management is here, as to the area - it is plenty nice (unlike the areas surrounding most ballparks) as to parking, do NOT park in any lot with a Lincoln Towing warning sign these guys will tow your car before you get in the door for the show there are plenty of pay-parking options, and cabs are easy to catch at any time around that area there is a terriffic sushi bar named Matsuya a few blocks southon Clark, not bad mexican food at Campeche, a few decent Thai restaurants and other nightlife abounds. feel free to contact me off-list for anything else - i have been in chi for 16 years and love it (i am originally from detroit and have v fond memories of bookies, the city club and ultimately st andrews hall as well , mr. e(j) ;) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I've also got about 100 Wire CDs, if you use the name "Wire" loosely. That includes all of the solo stuff and various collaborations (that's easily 50 CDs right there!). Plus all of the various artists CDs which include a Wire track - eg, MTV's 120 Minutes Vol 2, The Best Punk Album In The World Ever vol 1 & 2, etc. It all adds up to about a 100 CDs. If you don't believe me, check out the (outdated) discography on the Wire Page. I've never been to the Filmore, since I live on the East Coast, but I traveled to SF to see the Jazz Butcher at the Great American two years ago. I really liked the space. It's got a nice balcony with a decent view, or you can stand on the main floor. The sound was quite good in both places. If given the chance, I'd see a show there again. Likewise, if anyone in the southern Ontario region is interested in the trip, we have room for one more person in the car..... so please email me off the list if you're interested. cue lfo 'take it' remix now. g. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V3 #67 ******************************
