The venue itself is rather highbrow for my liking, despite Wire's artful inclinations, it was intriguing to see the audience mix in the foyer though!! Acoustically, I think the venue struggled to cope with the heavy guitars on certain tracks much to my surprise ...however, the applause did ripple very pleasantly around the auditorium. The incessant conversation was indeed annoying, however not at all relevant when Wire were playing, as we certainly had a wall of sound to drown out the chatter and the 'one to ones'. Wire appeared as uninvolved with the audience as I would expect, almost Kraftwerk like (Immersion even more so!!) in their manner. They did however, play what I wanted to hear, tracks from Pink Flag in particular that I thought I would never ever hear in a live setting.....so after a 20 year wait that brought a real smile to my face. Despite all the varying positive/negative comments, the main thing is that the band are back together and will move on from where they left off. With Wire going back to basics, instrumentally, it should be very interesting to follow their future creativity, I certainly welcome that. 2 people in a room and Another the letter were the highlights for me. I personally prefer the output of the first 3 albums to anything they've done since .....with quite a few exceptions, I hasten to add. Immersion, I enjoyed , He Said did not do it for me on the night. I was disappointed with the pricing on the sale items..the 20 minute EP at GBP10 was exorbitant (it is good though!). I did not really look too closely at the 'object'. Was that a worthwhile purchase?? I was prepared to lap up a few collectibles ...still maybe more will materialise for the May concerts. I look forward very much to seeing them in a more 'spit and sawdust' type venue as is the Garage at Highbury which I believe holds approx 300 persons at full capacity. The interface between band and crowd at that venue is always 'in your face'. I will be interested to see how Wire react to the crowd there. Anyone that went to Nottingham will have an idea about that I guess. Rumour is, they are doing a different set each night?....I've booked on the Sunday (it's bank holiday weekend)..I guess some of you in London will go for the full Wire weekend...after a couple of decades abstinence, a colossal overdose!! Well, I met up with Ian from this list at the RFH, his Watford shirt gave it away..and v/v my Wimbledon scarf!! Hopefully in a small venue like 'the Garage' things should be more straightforward re meeting each other.... Saw them support Throwing Muses in Birmingham at the Hummingbird once. Not entirely inspiring. Mind, I'm going on that performance and the Love Agenda (?) LP. They used to be on Further/Blast! Craig/Wireviews. - ---- "Comebacks are specious" Imagine the scene down at the "dunrockin’ home for the no longer crucial". All the old punks are in the dungobbin’ wing with Wire assigned their own special cupboard under the stairs with a faded sign  - dundeconstructin’ -hanging precariously from the door. A message arrives from their faithful retainer Artybloke "Mr. Important from Hugely Massive Global Media (toy and music division) says the kids think  you're really spiffing and there'll be a fair few bags of crisps in it for your you if you'll trot around the world  for a couple of years and sell their back catalogue for them." "Yippee" say the boys "What fun! Were gonna be famous again!!" …. er well maybe not but you can see how if you are serious about what you do and committed to contemporary art/ music that anything that has the notion of "comeback" "reform" or "retro" courts the above scenario. So there we were at the Royal Festival Hall last Saturday. Rehearsals done, item designed, all the supporting cast that makes a show like this an event already history, 64 days and counting to the American "tour". 4 blokes, blinking in the white light of their first structured and considered live forays for over 11 years. It feels like there are an ocean of possibilities. In moments of change there is a synergy between the past and the future as the moment expands to encompass them. I don't know how far any of this goes beyond personal concerns but in my "other job" of being an overworked and under resourced independent label boss I am very aware that there is precious little music out there which avoids the "mix and match" aesthetic as a short cut to the rewards of success or  that isn't so genre specific as to be a virtual industry with an industry. So little which struggles to gain  recognition through rugged individuality that the smallest pinprick of an actual idea can seem at times like  a huge gesture. So, how does it feel being in Wire in 2000? It feels, in all humility, that we might just be  able to make a small difference.
