It's a struggle to put an awesome performance like that into words. So I'll keep it brief. As we stood outside The Social waiting to get in we noticed the wording on the posters. "Playing songs from just the first three albums" No one had told us that! By the second song of the set we realised it was inaccurate. At approx 9.40pm four blokes pushed their way through the packed crowd to the front and climbed on stage. All four looking fit and well. The following 70 mins or so went thus: Pink Flag Silk Skin Paws 40 Versions Boiling Boy a new one sounding similar to Ally in Exile Lowdown Madman's Honey Advantage in Height a new one called called He Knows Being Sucked in Again Strange Serious of Snakes Mercy 12XU Wire looked like they really enjoyed the experience. Their confidence and tightness built as the set unfolded and by the time they reached Serious of Snakes they really were flying. A fair proportion of the audience leaped around enthusiastically the others stood with huge smiles on their faces. How on earth are we expected to stay in our seats on Saturday! Hello to Paul, well done on nabbing the set list. I was pure anorak - scribbling them down as they played so if there are any discrepancies then I'm sure Paul will oblige. Great night. I have just received a phone call from an excited John Roberts who is a lister currently offline due to visiting the capital for the RFH event. He was calling from a phone box at St Pancras having just spent most of the train journey chatting with one Mr Graham Lewis. Unfortunately he only had 20p but he did manage to tell me the following snippets from his conversation with Mr Lewis and asked me to post them to the list. Three nights at The Garage, Highbury, is a definite (four if tickets sales go well) and they intend to perform a different set each night. The reason The Social, Nottingham was chosen as a venue is that manager Paul Smith is from Nott'm and he organised it. The 'no electronics' set will be continued in the forthcoming gigs and was apparently a 'condition' to ensure Robert's participation. There must have been more words spoken but John was too excited and became a gibbering incoherent ramble before his money ran out. I look forward to hearing the full tale on Saturday. Yes. Wire are now recording for Wire. However, Mute are reissuing the Wire CDs in the USA on April 4 according to their web-site. It would seem the band are still on good terms with Mute - see Daniel Miller's appearance at RFH. It had also been my understanding from various sources that these would also be reissued sometime in March in the UK, but a recent posting to this list would suggest otherwise. I guess we'll find out soon enough. Craig/WV ===== - ------- Craig Grannell / Wireviews --- http://welcome.to/wireviews News, reviews and dugga.
