In a message dated 1/5/2000 09:04:23, you write: <> Town & Country was a Barry Andrews solo single. League of Gentlemen was a later short-lived Fripp/Andrews band (1980-81). Just played instrumentals. Also included bassist Sara Lee, who later replaced Dave Allen in the Gang of Four. Allen had left to form Shriekback with...Barry Andrews! Y'know, this is probably the last subject I would have ever expected to show up on the Wire list. One of the reasons I like it so much, I guess: >it had a funny cover with a cute cartoon mouse on one side and a >photo of a real mouse dead in a trap on the other (a sort of play on >the title). but sadly i can't recall what the actual songs were... Let's see here (checking my copy): The 4 tracks were Me & My Mate Can Sing, Bring On the Alligators, Mousetrap (Dedicated to Aunty Rene), and Sargasso Bar, the latter being one of BA's songs that XTC demoed for XTC's Go 2 album. And as long as I'm doing one of my rare posts to this list, I'd just like to mention that "Go 2" is (believe it or not) my favorite album of all time! I get a lot of static for that, for some reason... at least on the Internet, I do. Meanwhile, Magazine's "Magic, Murder & the Weather" was one of the biggest disappointments I ever heard in my life... just plain dull, I thought. Also: Mike Thorne produced an obscure Washington, DC band called the Urban Verbs back in 1980 or so - almost immediately after he did 154, as I recall! But the Verbs' records didn't do so well, in fact I think they sold about three of them, so I suppose it's understandable that they weren't mentioned! I remain very fond of Airships, in particular, to this day. OTOH, whatever the follow-up was called -- Spiky Dream Flowers? -- was quite a comedown, I thought. Even the Star Trek song isn't anywhere near the calibre of Where's Capt. Kirk & Spock's Missing ... It's far from my favorite of all time, but it's in my top 30 or so, which puts it in pretty exalted company. It's also the only XTC LP I ever listen to, having lost interest somewhere during side 1 of Black Sea. > >Meanwhile, Magazine's "Magic, Murder & the Weather" was one of >the biggest disappointments I ever heard in my life... just plain >dull, I thought. Their main claim to fame, of course, was being fronted by Talking Heads drummer Chris Frantz' (younger?) brother, Roddy. I've got their 2 albums (that I know of), & the first one has a couple of decent songs, like Angry Young Men & ... well, I'm pretty sure there's a second one. A friend of mine saw them in New Orleans around '81, I guess ... or I think he was *supposed* to but they never showed up, leaving him to make do with supporting act the Insect Surfers (wonder if they did their cover of Ex-Lion Tamer?) instead. I'm only just now scrabbling toward lucidity after a half-week with the flu or whatever the hell the crap going around here right now is called ...
