Not true. Not only would this be completely futile and indulgent on our part but the members of Wire themselves would have vetoed anything they felt unworthy of public release. To repeat. Everything WMO has and will release is with the agreement of the artists and the licensor (as applicable). 2) That we were to continue ad infinitum as WMO. It was clearly stated from the outset that WMO had a limited release schedule and life-span. The statement on our future, released in September, referred to this in detail. 3) CD-R releases for smaller titles could be an option. Yes, they could be. That's COULD be. As pointed out already by others this still costs money. If we are to maintain any standard, albeit on a cottage industry basis, then MZUI is completely out. The initial outlay would be £500 + VAT for the licensing. Another fee for reworking the sleeve artwork. Another fee for mastering. Then production of CD-R's. What do you suppose the break-even point would be. O'Shea. Whilst there's no licensing fee and the artwork could be botched together by scanning and laser-printing what would the returns be. 100 sales, 200, 300? And that would be mail-order only. Bruce Gilbert 'The Haring2' - again we would be prepared to do this as and when Bruce feels the need to. They premise being that there's no sleeve, no artwork, just a custom CD-R with possibly a couple of image cards from Bruce to drop into your 'Haring' box. Watch this space. Having said all that, and hoping that it puts pay to endless speculation and vain hopes etc., it must be said that money still controls what we do and how we do it. We have the ongoing and helpful support of Cargo Distribution and of course you the fan/customer without whom.... Obviously with Wire back on track (or at least stoking the fire-box in the sidings) there may be renewed interest for what we do. Like everything else with 'the business' we wait with baited breath. If there's one thing Charles and I have learnt over the past 4 years is that there are no promises. Thanks for your time and hopefully this clarifies and finally lays to rest the debate. ===== kevin eden wmo po box 112 stockport cheshire sk3 9fd uk __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Is there any reason (I really don't know) why a subscription service has to continue for any length of time? What I had in mind was simply paying for the 2 canceled cds up front. If not enough people are interested, scrap it. > > 2. Expense. It wouldn't be cheap if IP is anything to > go by as a benchmark. No argument. My expectation would be low as possible cost of production (I know, know, it would still be expensive) with higher than usual costs (and, yes, there are limits to what people would pay). > 3. I'm a skeptic regarding any resurgence in Wire "popularity"--I'll believe it when I see it. But I will say that when some of the grunge kids came looking for Sonic Youth in the early 90s, they wanted everything. Again, I don't think this will happen with Wire--let's wait and see if they even get out of studio (that they might not is not a prediction on my part, but an acknowledgement of a possibility). > number in order to make the scheme viable. Perhaps it > would work, although there are other means to get out > the unreleased stuff that would probably prove to be > more sucessful. Love to hear what they are. That you've moved from "we've already covered this [no, it won't be released]" to "there are other means", and that Charles (who is always true to his motto: he DOES like to get feedback) was at least willing to discuss the idea, means it was worth my bringing it up. Anyway, that's it for me. I just wanted people to know that there is SOME interest in these things. One last thought: Russell is, in certain quarters, very hot right now (small, alternative quarters, no doubt, but he even gets discussed on the Eno list these days). I don't know if that would help sales a little or not, but I thought I'd mention it. Michael Flaherty ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V2 #204 *******************************
