Well, that answers my question about what the hell Hox and Ocsid were when the first cryptic announcement of these releases was posted a few days ago. Why didn't you say so!?! Order will follow immediately! If these are half as good as HALO (IMHO the best of all post-Wire releases, at least as far as I've heard) then I will be one happy camper! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 08:35:42 -0400 From: Max Schmid Subject: Knitting Factory show - late report At 04:30 AM 8/24/99 -0400, you wrote: > >Date: 23 Aug 1999 20:23:54 +0000 >From: "nicholas marcilio" >Subject: Re: Immersion videos > >On Mon, Aug 23, 1999 8:17, Wireviews wrote: >What videos were played? I've seen the imersion videos, and they weren't projected at >either show. I was also at the NYC Knitting Factory show with Colin and Malka. My estimate would be around 80 to 100 in attendance. It was my first time at the new KF digs, and the room is rather dreary compared to the old place, where I saw Pere Ubu several years ago. The room is a bit like a square pit with a bas off to one side and a small balcony (I didn't go up there). Sorry I missed the opening acts - I still live in the past where announced showtimes were accurate only to the day, and I can't get used to shows that start before 11 pm. Just before the set started, Colin himself came out and taped up two set lists (which were grabbed after the show - great souvenir for someone, wish I'd thought of it first!). At the time of the show, I wasn't very familiar with much of their music, so I don't know the names of most of the songs, but they all grooved along very pleasantly. Yes, there were technical difficulties - it sounded like there was distortion on the very high end of the drum tape - I would have rolled off all the high frequencies, but by the second song my ears had done that anyway. Malka was mixed too low, and seemed to have trouble hearing herself. As to someone's comments about the lyrics, it seems to me they are rather unimportant in this style of music - just a reason to add a vocal sound to the mix. As to the light show (as we used to call it back in the sixties), it started with still images for the first few songs. A huge assortment of manhole covers were featured. At some point, the backgrounds changed to video-generated images, mostly abstract, mostly blue, rippling lines and patterns, etc. A strange object with two lenses and a shoulder grip spun around for a while. It added quite a bit to the show, so it's a shame it wasn't used in other venues. After the show, Colin came out and sold tour shirts and CDs out of a cardboard box. How seemingly incongruous, to see one of your idols, a member of one of the most influential bands of the last 20 years, running his own sales table. But then I'm reminded of one of our station's former fund-raising events - the Holiday Crafts Fair, with the come-on: "Buy beautifully hand-made items direct from the artist". Direct capitalism at work. You too can be a patron of the arts! By the way, the Live CDr was a hit at the party I went to right after the show. Finally, the WBAI webcast seems to be working again, and I can almost guarantee that if you tune in to Mass Backwards on any week between 3:30 and 4:15 AM you will hear at least a tune or two by our favorite artists. Whoever it was, what made them so persuasive (in other words, how much did it take to get them together, and why didn't anyone think of it, or offer that much, before)? And if money wasn't the motivator, then, why the fuck didn't they do it sooner? At the Toronto show, Jeff took care of the sales. There were 8-10 different CDs - Water Com, Bastard, My Pet Fish, Hide, the live CD, etc. Also, there was a Swim shirt which looked like the live CD. I don't know what Colin's plans were, but if you really want one, it couldn't hurt to contact Swim.
