I think it was a nod to particle physics, not neccessarily via Hawkwind, but just stemming from an interest in the world. I've found a lot of their songs seem to have at least a nodding reference to concepts that you'd pick up reading about science. I think maybe it was Colin who was into particle physics. I remember coming across one interview where he claimed to be more inspired by "technical literature" than any poetry or prose (does anybody remember where this interview comes from? I would like to quote more accurately but can't recall the source). Consider the song "An Impressive Beginning" off of Colin's 1988 "It Seems" album: "An infinitesimal particle A non-void secateur Particle and metaparticle ... Are you smaller than a quark Or do you just like the 2's and 3's? Well I've got a theory I've always got a theory" (Quarks are supposed to bind together into heavier particles - mesons, composed of 2 quarks and baryons, composed of 3). The business in this song about "A slide toward China" mirrors a lot of the popular books on science where analogies between "quantum weirdness" and Eastern philosophy are drawn. (E.g. "The Dancing Wu-Li Masters" and countless books that followed in its wake). "An Impressive Beginning" is however, to my ears, the least successful song on the album - maybe just the music is akward, but it is a little too weird to hear a singer serenading a quark... the subject matter is interesting though! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 18:32:11 +0100 From: "Stephen Jackson" Subject: Re: Wire and infinitesmal particles Charles G Waldman wrote > I think maybe it was Colin who was into particle physics. You maybe right...I just assumed that Lewis wrote that one, 'cause he sang it (at least on the album)...And at least on *collaborated* songs, wasn't Graham Lewis the main lyricist? I remember > coming across one interview where he claimed to be more inspired by > "technical literature" than any poetry or prose This is interesting, paricularly as words like 'charm' and 'strangeness' are things I would not normally associate with science. On another note, someone mentioned the possibility of a Wire reformation, but I've deleted the email. I just wonder if someone close to the usual sources would like to confirm this, particularly as it feels so unlikely? I'm going through one of my serious Wire phases, and have been playing 154 and Chairs Missing to death. Strange how fresh they feel. Now Damon and Justine have split up, who's records will Justine steal to fuel her muse? Apparently (according to the NME) one of the new Elastica songs (written by the departed Donna) has a section that sounds *exactly* like Kidney Bingos. Hmmmm..... Steve. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Two steps forward, six steps back. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 14:47:28 -0500 (CDT) From: Charles G Waldman Subject: Re: Wire and infinitesmal particles Stephen Jackson writes: > > This is interesting, paricularly as words like 'charm' and 'strangeness' are > things I would not normally associate with science. Then they need shooting. My very very low opinion of this group has dropped even further with the recent "everyone's doing singles so we thought we'd do an EP" read: we didn't think we'd dent the charts so we chickened out. And as for roping in a very pissed up MESmith ... > Hmmmm..... Exactly. I think Steve's quote line sums it up: "Two steps forward, six steps back". End of rant. I just returned from the Boston (actually Cambridge) show. The crowd was fairly small, unfortunately, and the mix was rather bass heavy -- we could barely hear Colin's playing. I never remember instrumental titles, but they played tracks from Bastard as well as several of Malka's songs, including "Hacol Zaram Beyachad" and "It's Odd." I did see the Boston Globe's music reviewer at the show; if there's a review, I'll post it.
