Yeah...that's the way I've always done it. Do the Midwest/Canada, then East Coast, down to the South (Georgia/Texas and perhaps Florida if they're lucky) then maybe to Arizona/New Mexico, then you do Cali and the West Coast and, circumstances permitting, the "lame states" in the middle (Utah/Wyoming/etc.).
