I have He Said Omala on the back burner because I've been listening non-stop to H-A-L-O since I got them both. This is a fantastic record! What's wrong with you people?! Too musical? Too dance-y? Too not Colin??? Parts of it remind me a lot of what Shriekback would sound like if they were still recording, and that's not a bad thing! (Now, checking the dates, I see this was made around the same time as the Shriekback reunion). I played several cuts last week on the show, intercut with some tracks from the Shrieks "Sacred City" as well as Coil's "Windowpane" (another tune that I was reminded of) and got more (positive) response to the music segment than usual. This week I played the first half of it straight through. I'm sure even after the newness wears off, I'll be returning to many of the tracks in years to come. Is there any biographical info available anywhere? This seems to be a shortcoming of much CD packaging these days. Like who's Mr. Umlaut, who co-wrote much of this thing? Was this a one-shot, or can we expect more from HALO? I'll be the first in line. (I'd guess not, seeing that this was recorded in 1994). I'm also at a loss as to the raves over Bastard. It's pleasant enough, but unlike Philip Glass and other music in this mode (sorry, I'm no musicologist) it never seems to mutate enough to get anywhere, or add enough counter elements to stimulate much interest for me. Compare that to the extended instrumental tracks on Immanent, which to me seem much more vital. But what do I know. (and very dancey) . to me a lot of graham's solo stuff seems to lack much variety or sparkle musically , too many similar tracks going on too long. i liked parts of he said but the halo cd just sounded repetitive. and i really hate the rap-style vocals (reminded me a bit of john lydon of all people in places). the one track i liked was eclipse , where the acoustic guitar changed the pattern a bit. I've only heard some of the swim stuff on the internet. I tend to like the low growl-whisper vocal style wherever it appears. It seems to have originated in Africa. I don't equate it with rap however, much of which seems to me playing the dozens in rhyme. I can see the musical and rhythmic connections to later PIL too, some of which I liked. Is a five minute track too long? Is a 43 second track is too short? >>> sorry , but i think bastard really works in a way halo doesn't. colin keeps it all moving , changing , vibrant right through the album whereas to me the rhythms on halo just plod on in similar fashion on a lot of tracks. to me bastard's as good an album as anything colin's done , i think he really took things on a step. I guess I just prefer music that gets my adrenalin pumping. While Bastard is not quite boring, it doesn't do much for me. Especially all at once. Compare to some WIRE tracks, like Illuminated or Boiling Boy. These have some forward motion, a groove that I just find lacking in Bastard. >as a lewis fan , how do you rate halo in comparison to he said , pre-he or dome? p I don't have most of these yet. I'm working my way backwards. I'm ordering all the Dome stuff today (really Charles!). I tend to get a lot of CDs at once, transfer them to tape for my commutes and walking around, and tend to listen to what grabs me most for a days or weeks before I try something else. At the moment it's HALO and ridiculously expensive import from Die Krupps (Paradise Now). I'm saving He Said for some time when I can really listen to it, as it seems on first hearing to demand some concentration. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 15:36:23 +0100 From: paul.rabjohn@ssab.com Subject: Re[4]: kaputt >as a lewis fan , how do you rate halo in comparison to he said , pre-he or dome? p I don't have most of these yet. Anyway, eBay had some problems last night and all auctions got pushed out by 24 hours, so the item will be available through tonight... the link below still works. thanks, fernando At 1:50 AM -0700 10.06.99, paul.rabjohn@ssab.com wrote: >well i didn't know there was a first edition without sta. shame when they >do that , interview would have fitted nicely onto the end of commercial >suicide.p > > >______________________________ Reply Separator >_________________________________ >Subject: It Seems CD for sale >Author: MIME:adrift@decades.cnchost.com at INTERNET >Date: 10/06/1999 01:56 > > >In case you do not mind eBay, I got a CD of It Seems for sale.. it is the >first edition without Si Tu Attends.
