I have a video at home with Morris himself saying, "I always wanted to be a drum machine" and saying it was these that most influenced how he played & his style. == - ---------------------------- Craig Grannell-------------- www: SNUB.COMMUNICATIONS - http://www.snub.dircon.co.uk Wireviews - http://www.snub.dircon.co.uk/wirehome.html - ---------------------------- cngrannell@yahoo.com ------- "Creativity is the highest civilising faculty - Ben Okri" - --------------------------------------------------------- _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Well, it's what Morris played, not what he said, or wanted, that informs my opinion of his skills. I know there are many knowledgable punk fans. Some questions: How do they sound as compared to early Wire? How easy or difficult is it to get their stuff on CD? Vinyl? Thanks Julian ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 21:32:18 +0100 From: NRuecker@t-online.de (Norbert Ruecker) Subject: Harvest label Harvest was installed at EMI in the mid-sixties as a home for psychedelic and experimental bands and artists: Familiar names: Pink Floyd (the early stuff was good), Syd Barrett, Edgar Broughton Band, East of Eden. Less Familiar, but good ones: Quatermass, Third Ear Band. When I was in my teens, this was THE label for me. It seems like Wire was the last act of quality to be signed to the label. It has recently been revived and now on its roster you can find experimental electronica from Cologne, Germany, and electronic (instrumental mainly) pop music, ambient doodling and such. When I got trapped by Mute era Wire and looked for older Wire stuff, I was astonished to see, that they were on Harvest. As I wasn't into Punk at all at first (I was too old already), I missed out on them in the late 70s. Norbert ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 18:53:44 -0500 From: Mike Edwards Subject: Old vs. new... Continuing on the subject of old vs. new, I was mad for early Wire and followed them faithfully through their solo work, personally feeling that Colin carried on the "WIRE" sound, while Graham and Bruce went 180 degrees away from it. I thought "Snakedrill" was brilliant and I listened to it endlessly for months, but "The Ideal Copy" seemed a bit of a let down after so much anticipation. For me "A Bell is a Cup" was a proper return to form, and is by far my favorite of the reformed Wire. As far as internal friction goes, at one of the 80's shows I saw the boys seemed absolutely sick of each other. It didn't affect the music, but at times it seemed like Graham was trying to drive them all around the bend. That show ended with Graham playing solo to a loop of Robert on a huge version of "Drill". All other members had given up on the song, but Graham carried on in grand fashion. After the show he let audience members buy him vodkas, and he regaled us with Wire stories and opinons. Vinyl? > >Thanks > >Julian > I'd say they were a *tad* more melodic than the bulk of early Wire, though fully as idiosyncratic, & I guess they never got as trad-punk as our boys did on 12XU. They relied a bit more on keyboard on songs like Nobody's Scared, A Different Story & Ambition (unless my memory is totally failing me here -- always a distinct possibility) -- may've been the only band other than the Stranglers to do so to that extent, come to think of it. Certainly worth checking out for anyone interested in '77 punk's artier side ... I'm pretty sure the We Oppose All Rock'n'Roll retrospective CD on Overground is still available, though the 3-song bonus disc may well be history by now. Ambition is on one of those DIY punk retrospectives on Rhino, if you want a fairly accessible way to check 'em out. Probably their best song, though I'm extremely fond of the other 2 I named as well.
