I'm all for free trade but understand the ramifications of distributing Copyrighted material, especially that obtained from the Wire "circle of friends". I see a lot of smelly old men selling bootleg videos and music from the back of their cars and at swap meets. I don't think they're doing anyone a favor - especially some dumb teen dumps twenty five bucks on the crap they hawk - other than themselves, and perhaps the Hostess corporation. What Andrew, Miles, Uri, Kevin and I are doing is what keeps the Wire candle burning. By keeping the Wire Video in our "circle", it stays with people who care about the music, and not... the Rat Pack? (like a Wire fan cares about that) This guy may or may not be a fan, (I'd say not) but I for one have a problem with this posting to a what is a 'fan list'. It's like porno on newsgroups. Once he gets the video - the quality goes down and price and generations go up. I have a huge collection of videos to trade of >>everything from rare prog and Krautrock through really rare Bob Dylan and >>Stones, Bowie, Residents, Jam etc. up to the various Rat Pack celebs. >>If anyone's willing, I'm sure we could work something out... >>Email me if interested, thanks and Happy New Year!! >>- - Robert Jazz > >Just a warning to the list - if you send Uri's video to someone like this, >they're gonna copy it and sell it at swap meets etc, to whoever whatever. On the one hand, there's no way to tell if Mr. Jazz would really *sell* the video. There are plenty of folks out there who would never sell any such item; rather, they'd use the Wire video comp to trade for more video or audio with other collectors... >I see a lot of smelly old men selling bootleg videos and music from the back >of their cars and at swap meets. I don't think they're doing anyone a >favor ...but on the other hand, whether or not Mr. Jazz is one of these "smelly old men," it's almost certain that trading the video to him means that the video will see wider circulation. Normally, I'm all for tape trading. That's part of the reason that I haven't set a list policy prohibiting the discussion of tape trading (for instance, the Richard Thompson list forbids trade talk). However, I do think that this list operates under some special circumstances. As Charles puts it: >I'm all for free trade but understand the ramifications of distributing >Copyrighted material, especially that obtained from the Wire "circle of >friends". >What Andrew, Miles, Uri, Kevin and I are doing is what keeps the Wire candle >burning. By keeping the Wire Video in our "circle", it stays with people who >care about the music, and not... the Rat Pack? (like a Wire fan cares about >that) While I think Dean Martin was ultracool, Charles hints at something crucial, and I think distinctive in our case. Items like Uri's video and the WMO releases are available to us in large measure because of the kindness of this "circle of friends." We return this kindness by buying from WMO rather than trading dubs of DOCUMENT & EYEWITNESS and by actually buying Uri's video rather than asking other list members to dub it for us. Trading these items rather than buying them from the designated sources not only puts them in the hands of potentially exploitative "outsiders," it jeapordizes the entire enterprise, not just financially (and we're talking very thin margins here, where the patronage of a few of us can make a huge difference) but trustwise. >This guy may or may not be a fan, (I'd say not) but I for one have a problem >with this posting to a what is a 'fan list'. It's like porno on newsgroups. >Once he gets the video - the quality goes down and price and generations go >up. Miles? Well, we can't control our fellow listers' activities -- if someone wants to dub their copy of Uri's video for Mr. Jazz, it's that person's choice. (And of course Mr. Jazz could make the whole question moot by buying Uri's video himself and then trading it to everyone else in creation.) But it is important that everyone understand the stakes here: if we don't support the legit and quasi-legit outlets for Wire-related material, we run the strong risk of there not being such items in the future. the police come in they say "where's Robert Jazz?," listowner Miles /====================================================================\ | Miles Goosens outdoorminer@mindspring.com | | http://www.rsteviemoore.com outdoorminer@zdnetmail.com | | http://www.mindspring.com/~outdoorminer | | | | "Why everything has to get in the way all the time I don't know." | | -- Janet Ingraham Dwyer | \====================================================================/ Free web-based email, anytime, anywhere! The only people on this list who I have read have Uri's video is you five. You five seem like the "Uri video" rat pack to me. I am normally pretty silent on this list but, what the hell was this for? These guys have nothing to do with URI's video or pricing. Yes it would be cool (very cool) if somoene in the states could distribute it but it is just not possible as far as I know. The only reason I have not ordered it is because I don't feel comfortable with international money orders etc. I think the price is very fair considering all the work that URI has done in compiling and formatting this for both PAL and NTSC. Anyway, lets try and keep it friendly man, at least there IS a video somewhere...
