I have volunteered to forward mail from a fellow subscriber who is having
difficulty getting mail to idealcopy. Here is his first submission. It
might be a bit confusing as it seems we are both called Paul! Anyway, here
goes.

hi there wireworld , finally found someone to post messages up for me so i
can introduce myself. i've been into wire since punk days but never got to
see them until 1988 (london astoria). since then i saw the bristol gig on
the manscape tour and the wir "i saw you" 93 gig (clapham grand). all great
, bristol was best. with a gun to my head i'd vote for 154 but i like a lot
of the electro-wire stuff as well.
anyway , as its xmas i thought i'd better nominate my top five turkeys ;
1. bruce ; bi yo yo
handily this comes wrapped in bacofoil to keep up the festive theme
2. g&l ; kubla capol
wake me up when its over
3. lewis ; a panamanian craze
must have gone down great live............
4. after midnight
5. blue jay way
not all covers work , do they
any better suggestions? keep rollin' on. paul

Are you speaking strictly of Colin's Solo Releases on Swim?
Or All Swim releases?
I think Plastic Venus (very good) and Oracle (not all good, but enough
to make me buy it again) would appeal to Wire fans who lean towards
pop music.
I haven't checked the swim page lately...I hope Colin finds it in his
heart to switch to real audio samples. AIFF's, though fairly universal
(even to platforms that haven't seen much development lately, like the
Amiga or the Atari) is s-l-o-w.
Just Rambling,
Robert.

I'm having difficulty figuring out why this should be the case, as Paul R. is subscribed to the list and I haven't received any bounced list mail over the last couple of weeks.
Is anyone else having trouble posting? If so, write *me* off-list, and I'll see if there's a reason behind it all.

Subj: various ramblings of late
The list rises again
I find the wide variance of opinions of wir(e) and offshoot projects'
merits fairly stimulating
It points up possibly my favorite characteristic of mssrs gilbert,
gotobed, lewis and newman
Their utter lack of constance or predictability
as a quick reply to a few recent comments...
turns and stokes seems to me to be the companion piece to document and
eyewitness the audio quality is not the principle feature here
i think of it as the antithesis fo the manheim steamroller if you will
oracle/immersion bothe just dandy by me
blue jay way - i had forgotten colin ever recorded a cover :) tune
this was the first song i heard off Not To when it was released
I thought it quite nifty at the time, tho evidently it does not stick to
the ribs to quite the same degree as say, Lorries....
It IS curious to me that Graham gets so little mention +/- in this list
as he is possibly the most prolific in post wire (personal) output.
At very least he is far from silent, but this list tends to focus on
Colin and Bruce's solo outout more. Why is that?

Colin's work in general. ie: Oracle, Immersion, CN, MS
The styles are often so disparate that a comparison is sometimes
irrelevent or at best very difficult. Also, the recent stuff seems to
be getting a lot of stick due to its lack of "real" instruments and
vocals. At least it highlights Colin's refusal to stay stuck in one
place and his determination to move on to new things.
Of course, this is just as relevant to the rest of the band. HALO was
sometimes like an up to date He Said but HSO is very different from
almost all of Graham's other work and the best thing he's done to
date. At least I think it is ...

I have problems with PV but I'd agree that it's 'band' format might
give it a wider audience. I don't know about Oracle though, it's kind
of like a weaker Bastard with singing at times. Still worthwhile but
better releases have followed. I reckon My Pet Fish would be the one
most likely to please Wire pop fans. Many of the tracks are arranged
in a 'band' format but the release retains the freshness and energetic
edge of Bastard et al. Also, Silo's Instar will definitely appeal to
pop (or, more accurately, rock) fans.

I think RA is a pretty awful standard - it sounds terrible but it is
quite fast. Of course, MP3's would be nice, although less so for
Brits who don't get free local calls!!
Craig.

Hmm. As most people have probably gathered by now, I don't care one
bit for the vast majority of Bruce's solo output, or Colin's recent, or
Robert's...oh wait. ;-)
I find Graham's solo work to be some of the greatest material out there,
but I don't think it's safe to say that he is 'possibly the most prolific
in post-wire output'. Bruce has prolly got him beat there...what,
three or four records in the early '80s ("Shivering Man"-era), plus
the last lot of noise material for Mute ("Ab Ovo" etc.), plus collabs
and such...
Colin's shoved out his fair shair of material as well: 5 solo releases
plus whatever he's done with Malka for ~Swim.
For Graham we've got He Said (x2), HSO (x1 1/2), H.A.L.O. and...?
Not that those aren't all genius or anything. Pre>He as well I suppose.
But you add up these numbers, and Graham is certainly far from the
most prolific of the trio. I'd have no problems if he was more prolific,
but hey.
Interestingly enough, despite my general distaste for solo Bruce,
in combination with Graham I find them a nearly unstoppable force
(cf. Dome, apparently P'o, Duet Emmo, and the earth-shattering 3R4)...
Speaking of collabs, has anyone heard the Gilbert and West "Frequency
Variation" 12" out on Sähkö? I'm a bit of a Sähkö whore so...

Hey yeah, all you new-electronica-~Swim people, what do you make
of Graham's output? I could wax eloquent for hours about the various
and wonderful qualities of "Immanent" for example...
Bonn out.
