Penguin Island is a genius album, in particular. I dunno, I to my mind, the CD bonus tracks (where the same songs are played live with different Simmons' bands) sound much better than overproduced album itself. Compare "gymnast" - sounds like it's two different songs Sergey Kazachenko aka Syarzhuk Be healthy, stay wealthy... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Dec 1998 06:47:14 -0800 From: "charles / wmo" Subject: Re: idealcopy-digest V1 #178 >I remember reading >some quote from John Lennon where he talks about music as furniture and the >difference between a chair that you can just appreciate and music you can >actually sit on. Even though I don't think I'd ever want to listen to PF, I find it discard the CD as a reference tool, or lexicon if you will. Spliting up the first three Wire CD's (or ANY in my humble opinion) is like dismantling a Dinning Room Set piece by piece. charles ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 06:22:15 +1100 (EST) From: Craig Grannell Subject: Re: Change the menu?? - ---Sergey Kazachenko wrote: > I dunno, I to my mind, the [Penguin Island] bonus >tracks ... sound much better than [the] overproduced >album itself. To my mind "The Gymnast" is one of two of those bonus tracks worth listening to (the other being "Man the Lifeboats"). The remainder sounded like horrible rock takes on the lush LP versions (which, if anything, were -underproduced- - hear the -rawness-) and for me were a severe regression for Simmons. In fact, if it weren't for the liner notes I'd have assumed all those live tracks (bar the Soft Option one) to have been -very- early versions that were honed for the release. It's odd to find the opposite is true ... - ---charles / wmo wrote: > Don't be short sighted either. I know from my experience with Wire and all the solo projects that certain LPs I find less than endearing (such as Pink Flag, Commercial Suicide, etc) do help put newer works into perspective and are therefore still worth hanging on to. One can see a path of development and go back to any of the various points rather than going to disparate places. The fact that these days I mostly tend to listen to the newer stuff such as Swim~, HSO and Wir doesn't mean I'm going to bin all my old Wire stuff. In fact, I have never thrown a CD away - I find my taste sometimes moves in circles or merges. I know if any of the records went missing or were sold I'd probably regret it later.
