I've only heard John Sims in RealAudio so far, but I really like what I've heard. Bedazzled is going to be releasing their album _Palomino_ over here, and I'm not sure when ("coming soon"), but you can hear it in its entirety on the jukebox at their web site. The first track I heard was "Red Brick Shoes", which isn't on the album, but will be available on a forthcoming label sampler. It's built around a guitar/bass sample from "Just Talk" by AC Marias, on top of which they gradually layer sampled hip-hop rhythms, some buzzing Stereolab-ish organ, a sedate bass line, occasional Moog burblings, and some nice vocal harmonies. The singer has one of those little-girl voices, sounding at times like a cross between Rosie Cuckston and Alison Shaw, and at other times like Mary Hansen on helium (okay, so I'm reaching a little bit here). I liked that track enough to listen to the whole album, and have been back two or three times to listen to all of it again. The album basically follows the same path - almost-twee pop built with sampled/programmed beats, organ replacing the guitar, bass guitar ("live", not a keyboard), and other synths and stuff filling up the empty spaces - and it works for me. My favorite track is #9 (forgot the title), where they get loud and almost aggressive, in a sort of electronic "French Disko" kind of way. All of the songs run together, patched with short instrumental pieces and bits of TV and movie dialogue (none of which was familiar to me). They're not really what I'd call "experimental", and I'd file them closer to 4AD-L than pure-impure, but they're very enjoyable nonetheless. - ---Jeremy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 14:42:12 -0400 (EDT) From: Andrew N Westmeyer Subject: Re: Hey little girl, come see, My Pet Fish Hi everyone, Well, I goofed again. Here is the correct info for Malka's "My Pet Fish". It was released in the UK on 28 Sept. US distribution hasn't been set up yet, though. You can order it through Swim and presumably WMO as well. Colin does not sing on it, but he was heavily involved in everything else (contrary to what I said earlier!). And yes, he plays guitar on it. I haven't heard it yet, but I've been assured that this is the most Wire-like item in the Swim catalog. Which brings me to the next thing. If you want any info on Swim releases, updates, questions, complaints, recipes, whatever, then here is their contact info (taken straight off their web page): Swim, PO Box 3459, London SW19 6ES, England. Fax = +44.181.789.0636. And email at swim@swim-hq.demon.co.uk. Also, Swim has a live CD coming out which is a collection of live rehearsals. It should be interesting! OK one last thing. I heard that our beloved Charles of WMO *also* plays guitar on one track from Malka's new album. Charles, why did you not tell us?!?!?! (Jason Leslie wrote): Worst album: Pink Flag - I should have known better than to listen to this one: I don't even have an (ideal) copy, I'd never play it (this is bound to stir up some controversy!) ______________________________ Hello, I think Pink Flag is a great album. It's a moving album. I think a lot of people don't like it because it's filled with more youthful sounds and a lot of older folks tend to brush off youthful sounding music to easily. When you start to complain about the volume of sounds that's when you know you are getting old. I think it is a briillant album but this may be do to the fact that I'm 19 or the drugs I take, I don't know. How could anyone not like "Reuters", "Three Girl Rhumba", "Lowdown" , "12XU" etc. The youthful angst in "Mr. Suit", "Ex Lion Tamer", and "Straight Line". The cool pulsating beat of "Strange". The speed king tale of "Champs". The climax ending of "Pink Flag" (which also sounds great played in reverse.). I sort of sense a Television influence on the "Pink Flag" album especially towards the end of album (like tracks 16-20). Does anyone know what albums or bands the boys in Wire liked before making "Pink Flag"? The "Pink Flag" album has influenced so many other bands. Like all those 80's punk & arty wave bands (Minor Theart, Sonic Youth, etc. etc.) It's influenced 90's bands like Elastica, Suede, Menswe@r, etc. Sometimes I wish Wire would have done more music that had the "Pink Flag" album sound. Thanks. Cheers. James P.S. Does anyone know the lyrics to "Options R"? If you do please send them to me. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 23:06:32 -0400 (EDT) From: Andrew N Westmeyer Subject: Re: Pink Flag is great!! Their biggest influence was obviously the Ex-Lion Tamers. And they mention Captain Beefheart in their biography. > Sometimes I wish Wire would have done more music that had the "Pink > Flag" album sound. I'm glad they didn't! Pink Flag has some great elements, but after a while you just have to go somewhere else. Its successors were also quite good. > P.S. Does anyone know the lyrics to "Options R"?
