Since this list seems pretty quiet, I thought I'd try to get some discussion going. I've been a Wire fan since 1987, and they've been my favorite group ever since. I guess I would fall into the camp that thinks their music is getting progressively better, as I really get into the quasi-techno, soundscapy, satirical mock-pop sound. I also admire the turn to meaningful social lyrics (though I like the earlier deconstructionist style as well). Some stats: Favorite album: The Idealcopy makes me happy. (followed closely by The First Letter) Worst album: Pink Flag - I should have known better than to listen to this one: I don't even have an (ideal) copy, I'd never play it (this is bound to stir up some controversy!) Favorite song: Pretty much impossible to determine... And a question: What's happened to Wire\Wir? Are they planning on continuing, with or without Gotobed, or have they decided to split up for good? What a shame, if the latter... And a further question: Is it my imagination or is the basic drumbeat the same for Amibitous and It Continues? Personally, I like all of Wire's recordings, each is so different from the others, yet equally well thought-out and rewarding. I must admit that The First Letter is not letting me in, but that is OK. And I have never gotten much into The Drill CD. Still, I am not ancient yet, perhaps there is hope! I've been into Wire since the release of Pink Flag. And have devoured each release since. So far as I know, the four last got together to perform Drill for Bruce Gilbert's 50th birthday, and I don't know if there are any further plans to reform. Still, they got together once, why not again? You should read Everybody Loves A History by Kevin Eden (available at amazon.com). An excellent book, which will probably answer most of your questions. This list has its ups and downs. For the first couple months it was hopping, then it ground to a complete halt. Hopefully some new topic will rear its head within the next few weeks! What is the general consensus regarding Colin Newman's Bastard recording? Personally, I thought it was terrible, but I am willing as always to listen to other opinions. It amazed me to learn that Colin did not write Wire's lyrics, since his own albums were always more "verbal" than Lewis's or Gilbert's, either separately or as Dome. I loved A-Z,singing fish, Commercial Suicide, It Seems, but was bored to tears by Bastard. Am I alone. or what? Flame away, if need be!
