Hi all A few days ago (yup I'm stillin digest mode!) someone mentioned the phrase "Illinois Toolworks" from Follow the Locust. Can anyone enlighten me as to why they might refer to this? I deal with a number of companies in my work who are called ITW .... and it was only recently that I realised what this stood for. I managed to restrain myself from calling them up to tell them that they had been immortalised by one of the greatest bands who ever lived - I suspect it would not have led to any further business. Can anyone > enlighten me as to why they might refer to this? Here's the story I heard... When Wire were in Chicago, Graham visited a doctor who gave him some medication. So the "Illinois tool" is the medication and it "works" because he got better. The key here is that it's "tool works" not "toolworks". Incidentally, the Illinois Toolworks Co. sent a letter to Wire with the obvious inquiry, so somebody there already knows about it. As long as we're on ABIAC. "Freefalling Divisions", "Come Back In Two Halves", and "Follow The Locust" all started as home demos. I've never heard the original demos, but supposedly a bit was lost in the translation to the album versions.
