My understanding of the process is that they turned every amp in their studio to 10+, then plugged in every guitar and bass they could find, and leaned them in front of the amps. They then hooked a beat box (that wasn't working well) into the soundboard and began to play with the noise. Thurston Moore says that the sound was so loud that they couldn't stand to be in the room--this from the Mr. Noise himself. The result? Less abrassive than the description might lead you to expect, but still only for noise lovers. There's a strange pulse running through what is, afterall, controlled feedback, which I find strangly hypnotic (I got it yesterday and I've already played it four times.) Thurston calls it his favorite of their records, by the way.
