The Gang's "sister group" The Mekons would constitute appropriate openers for Wire; they've followed a similar course from credible rock to brilliantly insane soundscapes (anyone heard "Untitled 1 and 2" from around 1995?). Pavement (an avowedly Wire-influenced band) would also fit the bill. Well, if we're discussing bands that fall in line with Wire's more "song-oriented" creations, I'd have to mention the Feelies and Magazine for the 70's equivalent and the Legendary Pink Dots, Wolfgang Press, and That Petrol Emotion for the 80's. As for the 90's, I rank "The First Letter" in the same slot as Coil's "Love's Secret Domain", mainly because they both embraced the current technology so fully and released scultpured layers of brilliance. If ever there was a band capable of droning TUNEFULLY at Wire's level, it was the Feelies. Although it's critically fashionable to namedrop the first Feelies record, _Crazy Rhythms_, I felt it was on their middle albums (_The Good Earth_, _Only Life_) where they came closest to what they seemed to be aiming for -- a sort of monomaniacal pursuit of catchy repetition. They were without a doubt one of the top 3 or so live bands I ever saw as well: geeky and, well, _driven_. -d.w. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jul 1998 23:46:37 -0500 (CDT) From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: Re: sounds like Wire? Am I completely hallucinating, or did the Feelies not cover "Outdoor Miner" in their live sets? I'm almost certain I've them play it.
