I was saying exactly the same to my girlfriend yesterday. It was one of those days where you say "Just listen to this" I explained the rather simplistic Colin="TUNE" ,Gilbert/Lewis="NOISE" rule of thumb (which I know doesn't bear close inspection but Louise likes country music so you'll understand that I have quite a challenge on my hands) She didn't like Dome much (those weren't her exact words) but she liked some of the He Said stuff, particulary "ABC Dicks Love" and "Do you mean that?" although she described "Kidnap Yourself" as "just a load of shouting" I'm afraid I have to agree with her on that one. - -----Original Message----- From: Nobrand- endorsing nothing. And I really can't be bothered to play them at the moment to single out one track. So my vote goes to Second Length. And just for the record I like Life in the Manscape. I may be a self-confessed *pop* fan but I also like Throbbing Gristle, Residents, Devo etc so I like to think my ears are open to other things. You can also count me in on being a Talk Talk fan. ~ Ian ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jul 1998 12:15:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Stephen Harper Subject: Re: 10 Great Wire Moments. At the risk of playing the list pedant (I'm a medievalist): "Master cut the stone out, my name is Lub(b)ert Das" is the calligraphical inscription on Bosch's "Stone Operation" (a.k.a. "The Cure of Folly"). This painting shows a man having a stone (signifying folly) removed from his head by a surgeon. These operations are purely fictional and didn't take place in reality. "Lubbert Das" (Dutch) means "gelded badger" - go figure. In medieval Dutch literature "Lubbert" designates persons of unusual stupidity. I've always thought of Wire, like Bosch, as satirists sending up the folly of mankind. There's a reference to that other "folly artist" of the Renaissance, Pieter Bruegel (the Elder), in Silk Skin Paws (I think the title refers to a detail in a Bruegel painting, but I'm not sure). "Keep your mouth shut", in the same song, is a reference to the inscription ("mondecken toe", or something like that) on another folly painting by the artist Quentin Massys. Phew!
