Fairly thin, again, but some new stuff to keep everyone happy. WIRE The exhibition of Wire paraphernalia retitled 'Phorensic Evidence Proves', held at the Workfortheeyetodo Gallery, Charterhouse Street, London from 1St May featured various Wire 'objects' such as the earshirt worn by Colin in the "Eardrum Buzz" video, original lyric sheets to "Go Ahead" and others, a pair of Roberts drum-sticks, original polaroids for tho "Mannequin" single sleeve, original Bruce Gilbert artwork for'154', Graham's 1976 diary (!) plus more. An interview with Bruce and Colin was published in the April/May edition of US magazine Raygun. SWIM Colin has begun writing a monthly column for US magazine ie starting in their revamped April edition. Swim releases due soon are the Pablo's Eye (Wm 11) album on June 29th (see below). Malka Spigel's new album "My Pet Fish" is complete and due in August or September. More details next Newsletter. Silo, a three piece 'post-rock' band from Denmark, are working on an album for Swim for possible release later this year, as are label staples Lobe and G-man. Colin was a guest on John Kennedy's XFM show 14th June. PABLO'S EYE - ALL SHE WANTS GROWS BLUE "All she wants grows blue" is the fourth full-length album by Pablo's Eye, a Belgian-based multimedia group that have been in existence since 1989. The focal point of Pablo's Eye is Axel Libeert, who has recorded disarming music for labels like Extreme, T:me/Em:t, ZTT and his own Celsius Blanco. This is the group's first full album release in the UK. The album is a musical travelogue; a late night soundscape with a strong narrative element. The lyrics, written by English writer Richard Skinner are mixed low and spoken by Zaïrean Marie Mandi, and add a further cinematic edge to the evocative music. Reflecting the international flavour of the participants the album was recorded in Brussels, Mechelen, Camberwell and New York. The musicians involved were: Erwin Autrique (mix and co-production), Patrick Hanappier (violin), Axel Libeert (samples and co-production), Marie Mandi (voice), Royo (guitars), Dirk Wachtelaer (drums). Please see the Merchandise list for further details. BRUCE Bruce traveled to Barcelona in June for the annuar Solar festival. GRAHAM Work on the Ocsid album continues. Hopefully plans for release will be made soon. We'll keep you posted. The He Said Omala "Matching Crosses" remix CD will be released in the US through World Domination/ADA on October 6th. WMO Both P'o and 'Dugga' releases are planned for this spring/summer release have been delayed due to release schedules by our respective UK/US distributors. We are happy to report that we have scheduled them for release in October! Distribution will be through Kudos in the UK and Europe and ADA in the US. PLEASE do not send any orders for these CD's just yet - we will give you final details in the September Newsletter! REAL AUDIO In case you haven't noticed, the Web Site has Real Audio clips from each of the WMO releases. Each file is approx. 300K and contains 3 minutes of music. Click and listen! INTERNET AGAIN We now have more or less automated our internet mailing list. To subscribe to the WMO mailing list to receive the quarterly Newsletters and sporadic Bulletins, send an e-mail to list@wiremailorder.com, with a subject of the appropriate action - subscribe or remove. In addition, if you want the latest Merchandise List, send e-mail to catalog@wiremailorder.com. Be sure your e-mail program has a valid 'reply to' address for either action. In addition to the site WMO maintains at wiremailorder.com, there are two other resources for the cyber-based Wire fan. The first is THE WIRE PAGE maintained by Andrew Westmeyer. Complete everything - discography, lyrics, images - you name it it's there. The URL is http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~qwerty/wire/ Secondly, THE IDEALCOPY is the new mailing list for the Wire aficionado. Maintained by Miles Goosens, it offers lively threads on all things Wire. Details at http://www.mindspring.com/~outdoorminer/wire CODA So not much to report, but stay tuned for the September Newsletter when we will have full details on the October release of both P'o and Dugga! I don't have any Wire concert experiences to share, but if you're interested in set lists you can always check out the bootlegs on the web page. On a similar note, I don't mean to be a snot, but... If you ever have a question about what tracks were on what releases or things like that, then check out the online discography! Kevin Eden and I recently compared our lists, so everything is reasonably current. (I'm 29) One thing I have noticed on this list is that in Wire's "reunion" period they picked up a lot of new fans who are primarily (which is not to say exclusively) fond of that era. A lot of bands from the 60s and 70s have had successful reunions or picked up a good number of fans who weren't there during there "original" period, but how many have a large fan base primarily based on the "reunion" albums? No doubt others (King Crimson comes to mind), but this is very unusual and a credit to Wire's continued creativity. I am one of those 'reunion' fans. I've got the old stuff, but I listen to it about 1/100th as much as I do the newer stuff. When you get right down to it, there ARE major stylistic differences between the two era's. With the exception of Colin's voice, and perhaps some of Robert's drumming, for the most parts they sound like two different bands. This is not to say that this is bad. I think Wir/e would be the first to point out that this is just evidence of their growth as artists. Now if we could just convince them to get together and create some more 'magic'! I was introduced to Wire by a friend who bought Idealcopy because he saw a review in Thrasher magazine (skateboarding magazine from the USA). From the first 10 seconds of "Point of Colapse" to "Ahead" I was hooked. Unlike some of you, I was in an electronic music phase back in 86 at the tender age of 16, I hated guitar rock until I was introduced to the first three wire albums (Well... and the PIxies / Throwing Muses)... After idealcopy I was made a copy of Chairs Missing which immediately became my favorite album at that time. In a short time, (less than a year) I had He Said "hail" Colin Newman "It Seems", Wire "Snakedrill" and tons of other stuff. I was hooked. I also had the "In the Pink" record where I was first introduced to the "Piano Solo" version of Outdoor Miner. I would play that song over and over again. In my senior year of High School, some friends and I covered "Lorries" for a talent show, this was in 1989, pretty cool huh? The hardest part was getting the drummer to play that crazy beat correctly. I think I now have EVERYTHING a wire fan can have that was "realeased" for sale. I am missing the in VIVO 3 inch which I need to get ahold of (I have the cassette single) I do have the hard to find "Cn1" as well as "Hail" and all the other Wire 3" cd's. I am also lucky to have the "Exploded Views" cd and Kevin Edens everybody loves a history, which I owe infinite thanks to WMO, otherwise I would never have been able to get a copy of this book here in the states. well, I bet this is getting boring! Hehe... And there also was that Erasure remix by Wir at the end of 1995. I suspect that any future collaborations will also be one-off's, because (1) Colin and Graham are both raising families, (2) Graham lives in Sweden, and (3) Colin, Graham, and Bruce are all working on other projects now. You can't just force the "magic" to return. If the time seems right, who knows? On the other hand, in the second last issue of ie magazine, Bruce said that he deemed it more likely that Dome would reform than Wire. It's not the same thing, but I'd settle for that! Not to be a downy-clowny, but I've been enjoying the magic of their solo releases over the past few years just as much as their unified efforts. I'd like to see them perform together, as long as they didn't play a "greatest hits" package which would be a blow to integrity and a big step backwards. I was down the front and I remember that the set was almost exclusively new songs which I hadn't heard (Kidney Bingos et al- my mate got the set list, although for reasons beyond my grasp it was called Kidney Lockups on the list) The only familiar songs at the time were Ahead, Up to the Sun and Drill. I can distinctly remember Colin's guitar, which was sort of axe-shaped (I'm a drummer, so don't get technical) and Robert, who had his eyes shut throughout. Most of all I remember Graham Lewis, who was like a man possessed. I have yet to see a band where a member played like his life depended on it. He was playing a headless bass (called The Rail I think ) and he had his teeth clenched like he was about to explode! He looked absolutely amazing, and at this point I thought he was the coolest bloke I had ever seen. ( I was barely 18) I got to meet them after, and that sealed it really. Was bruce playing out of a practice amp sized amp that was sitting on a chair when you saw them??? hehe... You are correct about "the rail" and "the axe". I wish I could have met them... sigh... Did they play "Drill" at your show? They did in S.F. and I think I can safely speak for the whole crowd, "I have never seen/heard anything like this before..." We were dumbfounded, in awe... Kids had their fingers raised in the cock rock inspired devils horns position and everything, awesome...
