Clearly, this cd isn't for everyone, but those who appreciate controlled and manipulated noise (as I do) won't be dissappointed. It is not, as someone here said, something any of us can do at home. Yes, anyone can make noise, but to do so in a consistantly interesting way is difficult. If there is one thing I'm sure of, it's that Bruce Gilbert knows what he's doing. (Whether or not one LIKES what he's doing is a different story.) I have Dome on vinyl, but I don't have a turntable right now, so I bought Dome 12 on cd. It's even better than I remember. Anyway ... I'm almost certain (99.9%) that the "anyone touches my bags" yelling is Gilbert. It's a "put on" voice--similar to one he used on The Harring. Finally, I found a used cutout of The Drill for $3. I avoided this CD because it seemed a bit much (9 versions), but I was surprised to find a good deal of variety. A good example of how creative this lot really is. I'm still not sure if it's worth $18 ... Merzbow, Masonna ect? Do you have any comparisons? thanks. flaherty michael w wrote: > I finally got Gilbert's In Esse (tight budget these days). Gilbert performed here in Chicago at the Table of the Elements Ytrium Festival last summer on the same night as Masonna, Tony Conrad and some guy who played 2 CDs of his compositions and whose name consequently escapes me. It might be hard to compare the Keiji Heino live with a fellow who twiddles knobs on a bunch of linked pedals, but Gilbert was definately the loudest (and physically disturbing) performer of the evening. This is not to say that I did not appreciate the performance, just that extremely high volume low frequencies are physically disturbing. To echo Mr. Flaherty, it's not e'reones cup o tea, but is mine. Ina actual answer to your question, I don't think I would lump Gilbert so much with Merzbow and Masonna as much as maybe Xenakis. Maybe Omide Yamoto's new I.s.o. would be a good frame of ref, but not so much of Ground Zero as I have heard (japNoise res obligingly supplied). d ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V1 #48 ******************************
