I also think there are some similarities to WIRE but not directly. Very early SM sounds like bad BUZZCOCKS (included as curio extras on the MUTE GREY reissue) and is awful. But about three/four tracks in this LP/CD really takes off in a big way. The similarity probably lies in that this band were also a PUNK to NEW WAVE bridge and is purely coincidental. (So much of it is "experiental punk" too (!)) Recommended but don't buy it because it might sound a bit like Wire, buy it 'cos it's good anyway!! Oh, and they used hoovers in a couple of tracks too :) Unfortunately the drummer - EPIC SOUNDTRACKS died just a couple of months back. Andrew N.W. asked about t-shirts ... MUTE had a whole load of Wire t-shirt releases in the late 80s including IDEAL COPY, BELL IS A CUP etc and had planned to rerelease them all (+ two new ones - the A list and Kidney Bingoes) with the A LIST LP in 1993. They had also planned to tailor a custom "ear" shirt (ie - out of the EARDRUM BUZZ vid) for ... well, anyone!! I don't know if this ever happened or not (I've never been one for band T-Shirts except my wondeful freebie FUCK THE MILLENIUM 2K shirt!!) As someone pointed out - if there were any left WMO would have grabbed them by now! Maybe it's worth emailing mutebank@mutelibtech.com but they take a while to respond (in fact, two months in my case!) 'Tis all for now! On the subject of videos, does anyone actually have any decent copies of the WIRE ones? I only have KIDNEY BINGOES and EARDRUM BUZZ off of BBC2's SNUB tape. Any help (particularly euro PAL - but NTSC if not) appreciated!! I went through my "Wire Mail" collection and found a letter from Mute dated August 1993. They had 4 long-sleeve shirts, possibly black (it's hard to tell from the picture), with one of 4 designs: a horse's head (a la ABIAC), a filing cabinet (ibid), an ear (a la Eardrum Buzz), and a letter "A" (the A List). The prices were 16 pounds for one, 30 for two, and 55 for all four. Shipping outside of the UK is not included. If you're interested, contact Mute at 429 Harrow Road, London W10 4RE. Be sure to send a SAE/IRC. Their web page is currently down, so I would avoid emailing them for the time being. There's a web page somewhere detailing this info, but I'm too busy to look it up right now.
