Hard listening, even for fans (like me) of everything else by Bruce, very much including Ab Ovo's odder moments. Maybe not for fans of 'noise artists', though? I was reminded, when listening to this track, of some of that japanoise type of stuff, though I think Soli might be a bit more intricately woven than most of that genre. I suspect this track will take much work on the part of the listener, myself included, to absorb it. Should be interesting to see (hear) what kind of turn is taken on the third part of this trilogy. All the tracks on BTC were early studio versions, not concert tracks. T&S has live stuff though. I think. > > Do any of you like the first track off Bruce's "In Esse"? > > It's a noisy pill to swallow. Hard listening, even for fans (like me) I love it! Of course, you have to be in the mood for a 45 minute "song". The second track is more conducive to mixes and the like. Nope..._Behind the Curtain_ is a collection of demos/alternate versions of tracks from the Harvest years (_Pink Flag_ to _154_), plus seven live tracks from the Roxy in London (from April 1, 1977..."New York City" is among these tracks). Very, very good companion to the first three albums, although seemingly rare these days.... - -- Creaig D http://2fmp.hypermart.net/mypage/ <-Personal Page/Reviews http://2fmp.hypermart.net/ <-2nd Floor Mafia Productions ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 21:29:00 -0500 From: Miles Goosens Subject: FWD: RE: Colin's solo stuff The second of two bounces... Probably Colin's most mainstream work and it is not always enhanced by the OTT keyboards. A couple of tracks stand out, notably ALONE which was in Silence of the Lambs. Dead cheap in the UK (about six pounds) but I don't know about elsewhere ... SINGING FISH(81) Well, it's okay but lacking something. Fish one is great but some of this is too understated. I reckon this album came out in the wrong decade, had it have been done now with samplers etc I reckon it'd've been a lot better. NOT TO(82) Better than most Wire albums in my view. Bloody good. In fact You Me and Happy is my seond favorite Newman track ... BASTARD(97) ... after Orange House and Blue House off this, Newmans best in my view. This LP, his CN SWIM debut is fantastic and probably also the closest to Fish musically (it's instrumental and very rhythmic). Buy it! BTW, if anyone on this list has either a copy of It Seems or Commercial Suicide on CD that they don't want anymore then please mail me! - ----- Craig Grannell c.n.grannell@uwic.ac.uk "It's just for now ... I was there about three months ago for the first time to see some avant bits and pieces (including a great 'mathematical' equation for art and life) . It's more of a bookshop than a gallery with its wall space used to show stuff. Mind you, the guy that runs the place (if that's who I met - I assume it was) is sound and the place might well turn into an essential place for unseen rarities. Andrew: I might be going to London to see Phillip Glass in the middle of May, so if I do I'll go to the Wire show too and send you some piccys (as long as they don't mind them being taken). Lastly, to add my tupence to the FL / Manscape thang - I go for TLF every time. In fact Manscape is one of only two Wire albums that I haven't got on CD due to the fact that I don't like a lot of it. Manscape seems to be more of an experiment - a new way of working and was therefore unlikely to be fully successful. Also, by TFL the technology had improved once again. As for the rhythms - I reckon both 'So and Slow' and 'Big Glue Canal' are blinding. 'It continues' sounds like a sample from Ambitious tho'. As for Rob, I think he was screwed as soon as Wire went electronic for Ideal Copy. A shame really as some of his stuff on IBTABA makes those mid 80s tracks a bit livelier. By "hard listening", I do mean the opposite of "easy (EZ) listening", i.e. it takes more energy on listener's part to 'assimilate' the work. Though one could 'bliss out' to Soli as well (this is what I attempted first listen, while lying in the blazing sun... it was a 'hard' bliss)... - -- Uses 'quotation marks' too much - -- _ _ _ Thom Heileson //)) //^~ heileson@u.washington.edu ((// // http://weber.u.washington.edu/~heileson University of Washington School of Art Center for Advanced Research Technology in the Arts and Humanities [CARTAH] 206.543.4218 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 20:12:54 -0700 From: Chad Wilson Subject: Colin Solo Opinions... Someone wanted some feedback on Colin Newman solo stuff so... A-Z , I give this one 8 stars! It sounds a lot like 154 reject stuff which is just great in my book! Another list member cited the keyboards as possibly annoying but I really like the whole production. My favorite track is "& Jury". In my book this is a must have! Singing Fish / Not To, 10 Stars! I know these came out as separate entities back in the day but can be found on the same CD now, and as a package it is unbeatable! My favorite track, and favorite song of all time by any artist (WOW!) is Lorries which is off of Not To! If A-Z is a must have, this is a REALLY must have! CN1 - Neener neener neener! I have this little gem! 5 single released only with 4AD CAD 108/201 CD (US release of singing fish / not to, first run, only 3 thousand released...) Again, I always treated it as part of singing fish / not too, because that is how it was introduced to me! Another 10 Stars! Good luck finding it! Before it was found for me by my best friend, I was offering over 100$ on the net for it for over a year! Commercial Suicide - Another 8 stars here. Great music, with real musicians. Tons of horns and no percussion, done RIGHT. My favorite track would be the last track, which I don't have the name of in front of me... It goes... "Your heartbeat, your heartbeat..." But I don't think that's the name of it! Interview - on Vinyl only, contains music from Commercial Suicide in the background. Colin is a joy to listen to! 7 Stars! but not a must have. It Seems - Came out around "A Bell is a Cup" and some of the songs sound like they just never made the album. But as with A-Z this is a good thing. I purchased this CD about 3 times until I found one that actually had the final track "Si Tu Attends" on it! hehe... I think this one lacked staying power for me so I will go 7 stars! Bastard - Uhhhh... ok... The music is pretty good, but nothing ground breaking really. I am not into "electronic music" so this one exited the cd player after about 2 passes. What really did it in for me was the lack of any vocals. We can go back and forth as to the artistic merit of this, but the fact is I don't like it so... 3 Stars! I find it hard to be moved by classical and other types of music with no vocals. It is REALLY hard to get moved by sequencers and keyboards bouncing around without a story in them. There are a lot of people here that really like the new ~SWIM stuff and I am probably in the minority on the Bastard comments. If you like that kind of stuff, I imagine it is pretty good.
