"Drill" is much more a verb than a noun. As Bruce has said, it was his best memory of touring, when they played Drill. It is an improvisation piece. Colin and most of the banc claim the Drill album as their personal favorite from that period. I like it because it 'rocks', something Wire songs don't really do that often! >this message is the current list of cover versions. Please let me know >if anything is missing. Sure - for all the Non-Wire titled pieces, it's somewhere around 1000 copies. For Wire items, (Turns, Coatings) more like 2000-3000. Whore did about 5-6000 world wide! WMO 3CD and WMO 5CDL are nearly out of print and WILL NOT be repressed. The newsletter has about 450 subscribers. At least that many have ordered through the mail order which is fantastic! Now here's the said part - with the exception of Coatings and Whore, we sell a maximum of maybe 40-60 of a WMO title direct. As I've stated previously, Kevin had to close the UK mail order becasue of this. And it would sure get the P'o album out quicker if 100-300 people would order direct. charles - -------------------------------------------- wmo@earthlink.net http://wiremailorder.com/ catalog@wiremailorder.com updated: April 07, 1998 - -------------------------------------------- PS> Miles - I sent a copy of the Newsletter 2.3 to this list - did it post? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Apr 1998 11:42:15 -0400 (EDT) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: idealcopy-digest V1 #25 On Thu, 9 Apr 1998, charles / wmo wrote: > "Drill" is much more a verb than a noun. I'm going to partly agree with you there, but partly disagree. On most of the live shows I have, they play pretty much the same thing. But on the other hand, there are a few places where they do totally different things. (1) The Late Show version is in a class of its own. (2) "The Drill" CD came from improvisation which led the song into a sufficiently new area to make a track out of it. And (3), along the same lines, the live "12DrillU" song which appears in a couple places is very different from the Snakedrill version. > > about 5-6000 world wide! Please don't tell me you're superstitious! No, there are no "songs" on it, but the collage of voices and sounds is very interesting--something I'll be able to listen to for a long time without growing tired of. The package itself is very nice, and includes some special art works by Bruce. I meant to do this intro thing days ago but I've been so very busy. Here we go... My name is Ibrahim and I live in lovely Toronto and I first heard of Wire when "Buzz Buzz" was a hit. I was 15 and I was a total U2 freak.(Yuck!) I didn't actually hear a Wire album until the summer of 91 when I found IBTABA at a public library. I thought it was wicked. The thing that wowed my 17 year old ears was that it sounded like they were making it up as they were going along! How beautiful! I didn't have too much money so I dubbed it. By that time I was also a TOTAL M o r r i s s e y disciple.(Shameful!) (Also got into the PIXIES -- I still adore them) The year after that I discovered A Bell... at the same library and "I simply fell in love" and it was then I wanted to investigate further. I decided to take the chance and buy this mysterious tape called "The Ideal Copy" for a whole 7 dollars. I got myself a CD player in late 92 partially because there seemed to be so many bonus tracks on Wire CDs. I spent most of 1993 buying Wire related discs -- everything from Dome and A.C. Marias to singing fish etc etc etc -- I have almost everything. I always wanted music to be weirder but it wasn't until I discovered Wire that I knew where to look. Document and Eyewitness is the finest live album ever made!!!! (5/10 was the soundtrack to my performance at school at the time!) I always wanted to make my own music but it wasn't until I heard Dome stuff that I thought I could do it too. Dome stuff taught me that by taking a sound, any sound, and repeating it, that I too could make music. I am a huge huge fan of the 80s stuff. Never really liked 154 -- I don't know, a lot of the sounds are just so old sounding. Pink Flag is fine but my favourite of the 70s albums definitely Chairs -- Being Sucked -- clean, cold and brutal. Lovely! Colin's Voice EP is a masterpiece. Probably the best "Colin Newman" record. But Commercial Suicide still makes me cry. The Hide EP is not! I really like Panasonic, Autechre and Aphex Twin. The first track on "In Esse" is stuff that any of us can do in an afternoon. Bastard is good, but not excellent. The 2nd Immersion EP is another very fine Swim 12". For years I wanted desperately to meet other Wire fans... Needless to say, I'm glad that there's WMO, the Wire Page and now...this. Look forward to arguing with all of you!!!! ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V1 #27 ******************************
