This has to be one of the quotes from a Wire fan ever! Bravo! >I must admit, though, that I haven't been interested in what they've been >doing (together or solo) since _Manscape_. I've heard Colin's new album and >it just doesn't do anything for me, and I've heard bits of Graham and well! You're missing out on "The First Letter", which is one of the most under-rated Wire albums of all time. Sans Colin, the band were very happy with this work. >2) For such a seminal, often-cited band like Wire, isn't it strange that it >took so long to get a mailing list going? >Don't you wonder how many copies of each album they've sold? It's nice to >think they've gotten some cash from REM & Elastica and Colin got some from >"Silence Of The Lambs" Read the new RAYGUN interview and you'll here the truth on the Elastica connection. Wire NEVER made any money off of EMI, in fact they haven't received a royalty check from them in over 10 years. This is a terrible truth and one that should be realized by all. Wire albums don't sell very much at all. Take that from the horse's (well WMO's) mouth. It's a shame sometime. >3) Regarding the decision to leave their live b-sides off of _Coatings_: >Boo! I think the live version of "Eardrum Buzz" on the 12" is blistering! I, >for one, would absolutely POUNCE on a double disc of, say, a concert from >1978 and one from 1988. It'd be a great representation of both incarnations >of Wire. There is a video of a complete concert from 1978 from the German WDR. It is widely bootleged... There isn't a very "complete" concert set from 1988. One should count IBTABA as a "live" album, Wire do!!! But yes, the BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ 12" is a jem. >4) Any idea when the P'o reissue is coming out? I mean besides 'soon'. Ditto >for the Colin Newman solo rarities disc? With the P'o album - when we (WMO) have the money to do it. THe Good news is that it is mastered and the artwork is being rejigged by Dave Coppenhall. SO the parts are done. Again, read above - Wire don't sell many records... Running a record label isn't what most people think it is! I don't mean to whine, but it would be very enlightening for most record buyers to understand. This is why the mail order is important. If say 1000 people would order the P'o album over the internet, then it would be a different story - Truth is maybe 30 people will. Now let's have some discussion about that! >Mission Of Burma took apart hardcore in a similar way and created something >very different. They get labeled with the "art-punk" tag alot, just like Wire do. Hey, these guys were second generation.... very influenced by Wire. >7) Is there anything on bootlegs worth tracking down? Are any of these really worth tracking down? the only ones i've heard, i think, are the remixes of "Life In The Manscape" that originally went with "Who Has Nine?" and "Gravity Workshop" (two of my favorite Manscape songs, those are). the remixes aren't very exciting, though the longer one is pretty thoroughly revamped. mostly samples of people shouting about african politics. > 7) Is there anything on bootlegs worth tracking down? It's kind of funny that people turn to me for bootlegs, because only a year and a half ago I didn't have any! Yes, there are some fantastic bootlegs. But of course it depends what you're looking for. Check out the web page (www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~qwerty/wire) for the listings. There are a couple which I just love. For instance, the 1991 show where they perform stuff from The First Letter. Or the 1987 show in L. A. which IMO they pulled off beautifully. Also, there's a rehearsal of "40 Versions" where they decide the arrangement of the song, or a version of "Cancel Your Order", which was never released by Wire but appeared in a very different form on Dome1. And there are a couple shows where they mix "Kidney Bingos" with "Eardrum Buzz". Check out the listings and see if anything interests you. If you want anything, just send me some blank tapes and I'll fill them up. I just found a like-new copy of Colin Newman's IT SEEMS (US edition on Restless) in the dollar bins here. Sounds absolutely lovely too, probably the prettiest record any member of Wire was ever involved with. Perhaps it's just because his collaborators are Belgian, but parts of this remind me of Soft Verdict.
